I have an 80Gb Ipod Classic, and iTunes 8.1 running on Windows XP.
With iTunes open, I connect the iPod.
The iPod screen says connecting...synchronising...
Then the iPod appears in the iTunes device list, and the iPod says ejecting...ok to disconnect.
I am left with iTunes open, and thinking it is connected to the iPod, and an iPod which is disconnected from it's iTunes.
If I choose the sync button on iTunes it say synchronising for a while, and then stops.
The upshot is that I can no longer add or remove anything from the iPod. Although all the original data is still there.

Your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch may not appear under Devices in iTunes after you connect it to your Windows PC.
If you see your iPod in My Computer (Windows XP) or Computer (Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8) but not in iTunes under Devices, try these steps. Start at the top and work your way through the steps until iTunes recognizes your iPod.

Hello, friend. If you are running iTunes below version 11, I can help you. Open iTunes and plug in your iPod. On the left hand side there should be your iPod name, go to your iTunes playlist and drag the songs you want to your iPod. For all of the songs, go to your iPod music library, even if you don't have songs, and on the bottom there should be a blue-ish bar. There might be a box saying "Autofill from iTunes library" click that ONLY if you want ALL songs from your iTunes to your iPod. Or You may try this ipod transfer, it's
a nice iTunes alternative that can help you manage iPod files including delete,
upload, play, copy, etc. It's much easier to use than iTunes. http://www.ipod-transfer-copy.com/ipod-iphone-to-computer-transfer-cucusoft.html
Restarting your computer is often the solution when your iPod fails to sync with your iTunes music library. But if this fails, there are other troubleshooting steps to take.
Recharge your iPod via a USB cable connected to your computer or AC adapter. b> Click the help menu in iTunes and check for updates. Follow the onscreen prompts to download and install the latest version of the software. Open the new version of iTunes. Click the name of your iPod in the source list and check for updates under the summary tab to update your iPod. Attempt to sync your iPod with iTunes. Slide your iPod's hold switch to the hold position and then to off. Press and hold the menu and center buttons simultaneously until the Apple logo appears to reset your iPod. Open iTunes on your computer and reconnect your iPod to try to sync it with iTunes. Restart iPod service b> Close iTunes and make sure your iPod is disconnected from the computer. Click the 'start' button. Click 'run' if using Windows XP. Type 'services.msc' in the run box in XP and in the search box in the start menu in Windows 7 and Vista. Press 'enter.' Scroll through the list and double-click on 'iPod service.' Click the 'stop' button and leave the properties window open. Connect your iPod to the computer. Open 'my computer' or 'computer' and look for your iPod listed in the devices with removable storage section. Click the 'start' button in the iPod Service's properties window. Open iTunes to attempt to sync your iPod. Close the iPod Service's properties window once your iPod has finished syncing. Resolve "Original File could not be Found" Double-click the name of a song in the iTunes program that failed to sync to your iPod. Click 'yes' or 'locate' to the message asking you if you want to locate the file. Navigate to the folder or directory location where the song is stored on your computer. Double-click the song file to select it and add it back to iTunes. Reconnect your iPod to the computer and open iTunes to restart the syncing process. The only way to save the files is by connecting it to pc and storing them in a file. Try checking the usb connection inside the ipod. If there are any broken wires or solder joints, re-solder them or anything you can do to get it to connect.
Try connecting it, go to control panel, the ipod should be able to found on the I: drive.
To unlock it you'll need to connect your ipod with the computer you last synced it to and from there open itunes. And, on the front screen of the ipod click on the restore button and your ipod will be restored. You'll now be able to use the ipod as normal, remember that it will delete the menu settings not the data from your ipod.
Please do accept this solution and revert for further assistance.
try updating the firmware of the ipod to the latest.when the itunes releases new version,it comes with the upgrade firmware for the ipod.just connect the ipod to the pc and click update and sync.hope it helps
I had the same problem. And I coudn't remember my SCREEN LOCK Password as your son. So what I did was I just disconnecteed my IPOD while it was connected to itunes without properly ejecting. This method doesn't retrieve or resets the password, it justs opens your ipod out of the screen lock. so your son can hear his music as usual until he can get a password retreive helper.
My classic won't sync at all. When I plug it into a USB port a screen comes up on my ipod saying "connected" then within seconds it's replaced by another screen that says "ejecting"
It works fine on my son's PC and my wifes Mac. Just not on mine. I have disabled the firewall. Tried all the various USB ports. I know cable is fine cause it works on other computers. I have latest in ITunes and have service pak 2 with XP. So needless to say I have tried everything I can think of to resolve this. HELP!!!!
