DC220 wont read brand new discs

When I put in a brand new DVD-RW disc the camera tries to read it for about 5 mintues then comes up with a message saying "CAN NOT READ THE DISC... CHECK THE DISC"
The reason I am trying to use DVD-RW disc's is because the camera wont allow me to initialize a normal DVD-R disc so I can finalize it and play it later on.
Does anyone know whats going on?

I have found that the only disk type that works in my DC220 is made by TDK found at CVS. Sony or Maxwell, has never worked for me.

When I insert a new DVD RW it says can not read disc check disc. The camera will not give me the option to initialize disc either. These are brand new discs that I am using. I can record with older disc...

You have to be sure you bought the correct disks. Look in your manual or your camera. You could use DVD-RW or DVD+RW. They are not universal. You have to use the correct version. You also may want to try a DVD-R or DVD+R. They are cheaper but are not re-recordable. They are not erasable either. A good thing if you don't want to "accidentally" erase your movies!

Discs will not play back on dvd

What DVD's are you using +R/RW -R/RW some formats may not work especially on non-branded media some DVD players wont even play CD-R but will play some CD-RW of the correct brand.

I suggest that you try your finalized DVD in your PC then create an image using ImageBurn then burn the image onto a branded media and try again. Most firmware on DVD burners are very forgiving and will support a wider range of manufacturers and formats.

Hope this helps, you might want to look on your DVD players website for updated firmware you will need a blank CD and create a update disc using your computer.

Problem with HD writer 2.0E

The reason for this error is that there is a conflict between HD Writer and other software on your computer. I was trying to find a solution for weeks before Panasonic advised me to remove other DVD burning software on my computer. I therefore removed Pinnacle and DVD decrypter (which I believe was causing the problem), reinstalled HD Writer and then everything worked fine. Note however that the DVD-RW discs I had tried to use before were corrupted and couldn't be reformatted and therefore once you have removed the other software and reinstalled HD Writer, start again with new DVD-RW discs. Good Luck.

Initializing DVD-RW Discs

This camcorder only takes DVD-R and DVD-RW, it will not work with the +R discs. I've used Maxell and Fujifilm discs and they both worked fine. You have to make sure the camcorder is plugged in the wall when initializing or else it won't initialize.

NEC DVD-RW 16x DL

If you switched to a different brand of DVD's try using the brand you used before. DVD burners are tested with certain brands of DVD's and sometimes the brands that aren't on that list don't work.
