My dryer will not power on, no lights, nothing. The dryer was turning off randomly before it quit then one day it just wouldn't do anything. So this is what I have done so far and i have a guess as to the problem, but i want some opinions before i do anything. Checked breaker - not tripped, cycled it and still nothing checked outlet - pulled plug out a bit and touched multimeter to prongs and its getting power checked power cord connection at dryer - seems to be getting power at the terminals So to me this means it's in the dryer somewhere. Can a thermostat stop power to the entire dryer? Seems like it would still have the display work. But I get nothing at all, no beeps, lights or anything. The control board still looks new, no discoloration or broken/loose wires. The cord is a few years old, but it still looks brand new. Is there anything else that can do this in the dryer? If there is, I can not figure out what it would be. Thanks for the help...

You are right. There is not a good connection somewhere. When you say your replaced the cord, did you also replace the plug? Make sure all fittings are tight. Where it is melting, this is where the problem probably is. You can also check the receptacle and see that the wires to it are tight as well. There is a build up of heat or resistance in that area tha tis causing your problem. let me know how you do. Good luck.

Kalola,
You can if you want to, but it's not generally necessary. Here's a picture of a 3 prong configuration with a ground strap...
That green wire with the yellow stripe is a ground and it is most definitely connected to the cabinet somewhere. So it will serve as the ground strap (in the above picture).
Here's the thing... say you were going from a 3 prong to a 4 prong. That is, the dryer was originally "designed" for a 3 prong. This means you'd have to "retrofit" it a bit. Take a look at this pic... ( I made this for someone else, so please disregard my somewhat hostile remarks, OK?)
The ground strap has been removed and has been replaced by the ground to the frame. Yours probably does NOT have a ground strap, though... yours uses that Green/Yellow wire for frame ground.
All of that to say this. Don't lose sleep over it. Ya done good.

Electric Dryer How To Hook Up Cord
For Three Prong Cords
the Center cord wire goes on the center terminal,
the left on the left ,
and the right on the right.
Note: There should be a ground strap or wire that runs from the center terminal to the dryer case.
For Four Prong Cords
the White cord wire goes in the center,
the Red on the Right,
the Black on the Left.
The green cord wire goes to the case or the external ground screw.
Note: Be sure to disconnect the ground wire or strap that runs from the center terminal to the case. In this Photo (A Whirlpool Dryer) I have ran the wire that runs from the center terminal, the Light Green wire, back to itself rather than cutting it off, just incase I need to put a 3 prong cord back on it some day. The whole purpose of this 3 prong / 4 prong thing is it separates the neutral from the ground.
