I have a Linksys BEFSX41 router (it is not a wireless router). Whenever I link into the Internet using the router. It has the name "default" and is "unsecured network". How do change its name and secure it? Please help as I am not a Techno person.
It sound to me that you have a wireless card in your laptop and you are picking up your neighbors wireless router!!!! which has no SSID set, thus "default" and has no encryption set, thus "unsecured network". Turn off your wireless adapter
The only security on a Non-Wireless router is turning on the firewall. It should be enabled by default. The other thing would be to change the password on your router, but since you do not have a wireless router, then it is pointless, unless you do not want someone in your house to access the router settings and make changes. Ever then, if someone in your house that is physically connected to the router with a "cable" could alway walk to the router and stick a pin in the the "reset" hole in the back of the router to reset wipe any changes that was made, so a password is pointless as far as I am concerned for non-wirelss routers.

1.Unplug the router for 1 minute then plug it back into the AC . Wait........ 30 second to see if you have acquired a signal 2. Confirmed that you have connectivity with the ISP ( internet service provider) a.Check your wireless setup and see if the wireless is on. b. do ipconfig / all c. test the router by setting up the router by MAC address..
You cannot secure the wireless router over the Internet. Basically the wireless router is secured by opening a browser and entering the wireless router's URL configuration address.
To secure and set up encryption on your wireless router please follow my instructions - click on this link :- http://www.fixya.com/support/r3559128-wireless_router_security
The configuration URL for the Linksys is http://192.168.1.1 and the default login = admin and the default PW = admin
Use windows network setup wizard to help in setting up your wireless. The wizard can search for your wireless. Some people believe you gan get away without using Linksys's software & I agree to a point. However Linksys believes to maintain a good connection you should install the software for the wireless router. You can download it from the link below. Check out the link "Learning Center". I suggest to all running a wireless connection to set up security with a password to keep freeloaders from tapping into your bandwith for free.

sounds like your internet access is the slow down, not the router. You don't say if you have DSL or CABLE or what. I'd check there. Make sure you are getting a strong signal. Hook up one system directly, without the router and check the speed.
I reckon that you may need to configure your router to open ports to allow the internet traffic access.
If you go to this link it will help you to configure the necessay "Port Forwarding" settings.
