The dryer gets warm and it spins but it takes about 4 hrs. to dry and will not shut off on its own. what can i do to fix this problem it running up my gas bill
Dryer wont stop regardless of timed dry, auto dry, perm press settings..
But, Clothes Do get Dry!
Selection knob doesnt rotate as it should when dryer is running (ie) running down to zero time left..
I suspect the timer is the problem.

I hope you got this fixed by now but if not I'll put in my 2 cents.. I assume that your dryer is electric and not gas. Assuming that is true then you probably have an open heater element.. similar to this used in electric stoves... There may also be other components that could have failed and in so doing, disabled power to that element. Could be a contactor or temp switch/thermistor.. Hope this helps and that you've already solved the problem...

i am sending you all the possibilities for your problem, check either of these causes ----and than let me know if it is solved----
Power from the house
Check to see whether there's power getting to the dryer. Is it plugged in? Check for blown fuses or tripped circuit breakers--your dryer uses two fuses or circuit breakers. The dryer could tumble but not heat if only one of the two fuses is blown. If you have circuit breakers, one of the two circuit breakers can trip, even if the two for the dryer are connected.
Heating element
Often a dryer heating element burns out, but doesn't trip the circuit breaker or blow a fuse. The heating element is simply a long coil of special wire. You can check it for continuity with an ohm meter. No continuity means the element is bad and you need to replace it--electric heating elements aren't repairable.
Thermal fuse
On many dryers, there's a thermal fuse mounted to the exhaust duct inside the back cover panel. The fuse--which is about an inch long--is usually embedded in black resin and mounted in a white plastic housing. If the fuse has blown, you need to replace it. (You can't re-set it.)
Wiring
A common problem is for the main wiring connection from the house, at the dryer, to burn and break its connection. Because the dryer can still tumble with partial power, the connection may be only partially defective. You may need to replace both the power cord to the dryer and the terminal block inside the dryer that the wire is attached to.

this is joyce
It is as you guessed your sensor. it is usually located in door but some models are in back of machine on inside, go online download document papers go to maytag.com put in model# and then download your model # and it will show you where your sensor is located, it should be simple to replace. I had the same problem with my dryer.
I am glad you said you checked the dryer lines because if these get clogged up they will cause the dryer not to dry the clothes correctley. very smart....if you need me to help let me know.
thanks,
joyce
SOURCE: maytag dryer not heating up thus not drying clothes
This is usually a simple heating coil malfunction. The coil may have breaks in it causing it not to work. It could also have something to do with 1 of several heating sensors that may be broken, telling the dryer's heating coil that the dryer is too hot, in effect turning off the heating coil. If your dryer has a round lint filter in the rear of the drum, it was 1 of 2 models of Dependable care dryers produced in the 1970's. If this is the case, i supose it would be up to you whether you want to try and get it repaired or not. If you have one of the more recent models,,, the lint filter is directly behind the door, at the front of the drum. and in this case it would probably be a good idea to get it looked at it as Maytag is a relatively dependable brand.

Is it an auto sensor shut off? If so, it may be that your hose is plugged and so actually takes that long to dry the clothes.

DRYER IS NOT a MAV6000
it is Maytag Atlantis MDG6400
I suspect you have the answer! Try Amazon or e-bay for a timer, after you take the control panel apart and get the numbers off the old one.
