Check the following :
1. Check whether the printer you want to print is set as the default printer, by taking the control panel, then choose Printer and right your printer icon, then select 'SET AS DEFAULT PRINTER'.
2. Reconnect the printer cable to the PC. If that doesn't solve, replace the cable with new one.

Solution from another FixYa topic:
(1) With the printer turned on, unplug it (2)Open the top and bring the ink cartridge holder to the middle (3)Raise the gray bar and remove the print head assembly with the cartridges in it (4) Lower the gray bar with the head missing and close the top with the head out (5) Restore the power,wait til the printer wakes up (6) It will tell you to put in the cartridges (7) Restore the print head, close the top and the printer should resume working..... ;)

Canon pixma ip8500, on third print head in about 4 years. will not print yellow despite repeated head cleaning cycles, now waste ink absorber is full. need instructions for emptying/replacing said...
the waste ink absorber cannot be replaced mate. you have to buy new printer.the waste ink absorber is the sponge part where head cleans all its ink. its a common problem in cannon.

Canon pixma iP8500 won't print, blank pages
The colour cartridge is badly clog. put tissue with warm/hot water below the head, wait for about 30 minutes. If tissue is coloured, the dried ink inside head is out. Is it not, do suction from the outlet pipe of head cleaning mechanics.

6C, 6M, and 6Y tanks don't print
Maybe if you have access to another canon printer you could try the cartridges in that to prove if they are ok. Most of that series have those cartridges.
