GE Freezer Not Freezing

I have an upright freezer that started thawing items on the upper shelves, while items in the bottom basket were still frozen.

There was a significant build-up of ice in the lower back (under the basket), so I unplugged the unit, let it thaw overnight, then plugged it back in. It is still not freezing.

I hear something running constantly. Since it's a frost-free model, it could be the defroster??

I am not an expert, but if the defrost heater is not working, then maybe when it was unpluged the coils didn't completly unthaw. If not, the freezer still will not cool properly.

The top two shelves are not freezing and the food on those shelves and that area of the door have defrosted. The bottom seems to be freezing. I can hear the fan running and do not feel any drafts from

Obviously that freezer is not achieved the required temperature. There are several reasons for that:
- Defrosting system is not working, which leads to accumulation too much ice on the evaporator that prevents heat transfer and reduces air circulation despite the fan is running.
- The problem with draining condensate after defrosting cycle which also leads to accumulation of ice.
- Leaking gas from the cooling system (reduced cooling capacity)
- Faulty compressor

Freezer is running but the items are thawing and not freezing

it could possible be the defroster unit going out on the thermostat theres a hole on the bottom where you can access a screw that will allow you to check and see if the defroster is working put a srew driver in the hole and turn it clock wise till you here it click and then listen for the unit to start defrosting cycle you'll hear a hissing like sound if its working if not you'll need a new defrosting unit

Not freezing equally

Look for frost build up on back wall at bottom the auto defrost may be out. Check if the evaporator fan is blowing. If not it's stuck by something or needs replaced. If not The sealed system may have a leak or restiction causing it to only work closest to the evaporator i.e. the lower shelf.

Freezer not keeping items completly frozen

thius suggests the defrost system not working and the defrost drain blocked. take off the back panel inside the freezer, melt off excessive ice and free the drain at the bottom with hot water and patience
