While watching a video, the screen went black. Restarted and power light comes on and I hear the dvd drive start and then stop. Will not reboot even with boot disk.

Try to remove the battery and unplug the power supply, then hold down the power button for about 10 seconds. If this doesn't work, it could be that the laptop overheated while watching the DVD.

yes, very much so, you can even get a USB external laptop hard drive enclosure so that you can use your laptop hard drive like you would use a USB thumb drive. "Never give up! Never surrender!" hehe.

Dell inspiron 1501 laptop can hear windows open can see very faint password window but screen is black wont light up

The lcd back light hs gone, there are many repair sites for dell, so do a google search for spares and repairs type the model into the search bar and it should bring up the parts you need and how much they will be, if you buy a back light the instructions on how to replace them normally come with it.
hope this helps.

My dell inspiron 1501 laptop has been flickeri ng colors or a lrge strip down middle , now half the screen is black with little color line

hello
This could be anything from the screen is dying or the inverter (electronic board that powers the screen' back light).

If you press slightly at the top of the screen, see if the lines will disappear or not, if it does then come back again; you might need to change your lcd.
hope it helped

I have a inspiron 1501 won't start up black screen f8 does not work either

Does it power on at all? Do you see anything on screen (DELL/BIOS for example)? Is it in a docking station? Also make sure the power is attached.

Inspiron 1501

Two things that you can check that cause this are the battery and the memory. Remove the battery and start on the power supply only. Then remove the memory and try each chip, one at a time in each slot. These are the two main causes of a no start with Dell machines. If it's not one of these, then the problem is going to be with a motherboard component, and you will need to take it in for a professional diagnostics in order to track down the exact problem area.
