Sony FM Stereo Receiver STR-DE485 - When the sound gets really loud especially when the sub woofer is on, the receiver stops and displays "PROTECT"
This generally means you've got a short somewhere, and the received is trying to protect itself.
My suggestion is to disconnect all of your speakers at both ends, and reconnect them.
Most times this happens because a speaker wire is lose, and the positive and negative connections are touching each other, causing it to short out.
I als had a problem where protect mode only occurred in loud sequences on DVDs. It ended up being a short in one of the surround speaker cables which only was significant enough to cause a PROTECT mode when loud signals were sent to the speakers.
