Just bought an Olympus Stylus 710 camera.
Charged the battery and went to take pictures and it only works half the time. I was able to take my first picture but after that the screen went black. I am able to access the menu with no trouble and even take pictures but they come out black. After taking a few pictures the camera will start working again for a few photos and then just randomly go black again.
Any ideas
This could be a bad connection in the camera. Inside your camera you have these little connectors that basically have a lever that applies pressure to the flat ribbon cables in side the camera. If your camera is still under warranty, send it back. If not, then you have nothing to lose by getting yourself a PT.0 Philips screw driver and open the camera and check all the connections. As I mentioned before. Be carefull of the capacitor (it looks like a batter), for it stores a great deal of energy for a very long time.
Good luck.

The indicade cards to your cam are:
xD-Picture Card (16, 32, 64, 128, 256, 512MB or 1GB)
The maximum value to your cam is 1Gb.
These information are from Olympus manufacturer.
Your camera came with a cable to plug into your PC...or at least it should have. If you don't have one, pick one up at and electronics store. Then you will probably need to download the software in order to copy directly from the camera...get it here:
If the lens is stuck out extended you may want to call Olympus Customer Service to discuss repair process and pricing. If the battery is fully charged and the lens still stays extended then this is a clear repair issue as something in the lens assembly has failed. Their telephone number is 800-622-6372 option 2 and then option 3
I don't have a solution we bought another camera. but our 710 is not very old and would like to get thisone fixed but will not pay $100 just to get it checked
Make sure that the battery is fully charged. If the problem still occurs, take the caemra with your proof of purchase to any authorised Olympus repair shop and they will repair it for you. Provided you haven't taken it to the beach and got it sandy or wet or spilled soda pop on it.
