Either the 64kb of bios memory is damaged and not allowing the system to pass the post check, or the processor is unable to find the boot.ini file because of a corrupt hard drive or file. The first thing to try is if you are using XP is to keep pressing F8 on start up and then when windows enters safe mode select the line 'Last known good configuration' and press enter for a restart, if there is nothing major wrong then the system will boot up. If it won't boot then you are going to need to set your notebook to boot from cd drive (F2 or del on boot up and enter the bios and change first boot device to cdrom) and boot up using your; or a borrowed Windows XP disc and perform a system repair. Post back for further instructions, as it may be the hard drive that is damaged.

I would contact www.toshiba.com amd speak to the technical department, they are very helpfull. It may be a RAM fault or a hard drive fault but as you have data on the drive, I don't want it to go pear shaped and for you to lose any data.
Hope that helps.

Winxp install issue on hp 8430p laptop. When I boot from WinXp SP3 CD the Windows setup program doesn't seem to start, I just see a blank screen, I even tried to slipstream the drivers from HP but sill...

The Bios isn't recognising the CD (or the CD drive) as having a boot device.
This means that your CD drive may be duff (can you borrow/buy an external CD drive?) or that the CD disk is broken or hooky.
That means that you either need to see if the machine has an onboard restore partition (look for the "Press F11 To Restore" at startup) or borrow a friends WinXP install disk. if you have an IT dept at work, they can possibly lend you one.
Make sure you enter the serial code that came with your XP disk.

Black Gateway screen Help

I had a problem starting up from the black screen. I went the route of restoring the laptop not know of a possible "common" problem. The following is what I used for my system restore to get my laptop running, perhaps by following the steps to change the bios it might also fix your problem. If anything it doesn't hurt to try at this point.

URL: http://forums.techguy.org/hardware/582490-freezing-during-full-system-restore.html

do these steps to disable SpeedStep in the BIOS Setup Utility and then run System Restore again on your computer.
1. Turn on the computer and begin pressing the F2 key in one-second intervals. If you perform this step correctly, you see the BIOS Setup Utility menu. If Windows loads normally, repeat this step.

2. In the BIOS Setup Utility, press the RIGHT ARROW key to select the Advanced menu.

3. On the Advanced menu, change the Intel SpeedStep setting from Enabled to Disabled.

4. Press the RIGHT ARROW key to select the Exit menu.

5. On the Exit menu, select Save Changes and Exit

6. Restart the computer and run System Restore.

7. After completing the restore, download and install the Critical Update for Windows XP (KB885626) package from the Microsoft Web site.

8. Once the KB885626 package is installed, re-enable Intel SpeedStep in the BIOS Setup Utility.

Hdd password locked how can i get around it?

Restart the computer:

When it starts to load, watch at the bottom of the screen for two F commands:

You'll have to look quick, cause they don't stay up long, and you may need to restart to see both of them.

Once you have located and determined which will enter setup, hit that F command to go into setup.

Once in setup, you'll see a File Menu.

Scroll to the menu that allows you to change the password.

To change it (since you don't know or can't remember the old one) simply hit enter in this field. If you want a new one, type in the desired password and (write it down) and hit enter. If you don't want a password, simply hit enter and it will enter blank as no password.(not the word "blank"), it will just be set for NO password.

Once you have successfully changed (cancelled out) the password, scroll over ot the Exit Menu list, and scroll down to "save and exit".

This will exit setup and your OS should resume to open. If it prompts for a password, simply hit enter, and it should load into the OS.

If it does not, restart the computer, as it may not have saved the new setting just yet.

Please let me know if you need any further assistance.

Turn on, asks for password, computer works for a min & blank scre

If you keep pressing F8 before Windows starts to load it should display a menu, if you choose "safe mode" it may then load into Windows. If you're using WinXP you can try a system restore - click start, all programs, accessories, system tools, system restore. It should display a calendar. Click on any date in bold and restore to that date. It may solve the problem for you. Did you install a new game or anything just before it went wrong?

My Acer Aspire 3000 has a blank screen

I suggest you check the settings of your bios. Normally this happens if your Hard drive is unreadable. Change the settings of the boot function to first boot on Hard disk and try to disable all other bootable hardwares like CD or network card.

Hope this helps.
