I borrowed a laptop. when i went to cut it it would start to load up then screen would go blank. i panicked it went to the setup menu and pressed some stuff. now when i shut it on it just reads compaq and wont go to the next step. when i press f2 to go to the setup menu to undo what i did, it says its going but never does. please help!!!!
Either the 64kb of bios memory is damaged and not allowing the system to pass the post check, or the processor is unable to find the boot.ini file because of a corrupt hard drive or file. The first thing to try is if you are using XP is to keep pressing F8 on start up and then when windows enters safe mode select the line 'Last known good configuration' and press enter for a restart, if there is nothing major wrong then the system will boot up. If it won't boot then you are going to need to set your notebook to boot from cd drive (F2 or del on boot up and enter the bios and change first boot device to cdrom) and boot up using your; or a borrowed Windows XP disc and perform a system repair. Post back for further instructions, as it may be the hard drive that is damaged.
