Question about HP Photosmart R817 Digital Camera

"Charging Flash" This is the second R817 I've had with the exact same problem. The battery is fully charged, but the flash won't work--it says "charging flash", but nothing happens. I have to turn the flash off to get it to take any picture. The fools at HP say too bad, so sad, replace it.....

I have the same problem. I even bought a new battery and updated the firmware, but it didn't help.. :((

HP usually makes good products, but this is a damn mistake.

I have the exact same problem, the battery is charged but the camera keeps saying charging flash. My wife read the trouble shooting section of the book and it says the battery is bad. So I paid $40.00 for a new battery and the same thing happened. I called HP and they said they would send me a new camera for $125.00 What good is it if I can only take pictures outside. My warranty ran out I week before the camera did.

I have the same problem too. It's too bad because I like the macro mode on this camera.

I have the same problem. I have two batteries, and they both give the same results if the camera sits for a week or so. If it only sits a day between uses, it isn't really a problem. I, too, hold down the button to try to "charge" the flash. Eventually, it does work again. I keep snapping until it seems charged again. However, this usually fully drains the battery, and I have to immediately recharge the battery again. I try to do this the day before I know I will need my camera--really spontanious, hey!! Currently, I am trying the tactic of taking the battery out of my camera between uses. We'll see if that works.

Have same problem. Charging flash- never takes picture. Inside, only if I aim it directly towards an open window, will it go off WITHOUT flash. Flash simply does not work. When I sit it on the dock it says "no thing connected to the camera dock" or something like that. I purchased a new battery- same problem. Only place it takes a decent no flash (ONLY way to get a pix) is in bright lighting outside- like pointing it at the sky! what the heck is WRONG with this darn thing? Am currently trying to dig up the purchase info so I can fix this thing or else. My sony Mavica worked better- (though when I bought new battery it only charged up twice; no idea about that EITHER yet. ugh!

HP R817 charged but won't charge flash. I've had this camera for 15 months. This is my last HP product if they won't do something about this.

  • xrotor Aug 13, 2008

Me and my brother-in-law each have one of the R817's and over time both started to exhibit the "charging flash" issue. On his we took it apart and found some corrosion on the lead running into the flash capacitor. We cleaned and re-soldered the connection and it started to work again. We then took mine apart expecting to find the same thing but it was clean and there was nothing to fix. My unit remains with the problem. Now, after several months the unit we repaired has the charging flash problem again. I think the issue is a defective or poor quality capacitor that runs the flash. It is really too bad because I otherwise really like the camera and it takes great macro shots. We also tried bios upgrades and holding the button down for long periods with elastics all to no avail

charging flash message and camera gets very hot

  • Anonymous Oct 12, 2008

I had the same problem. It resolved when I did a reset of the camera. Instructions are at the hp website. Basically you take the SD cad out, take the battery out, and take a straightened paper dip to push the reset hole near the battery compartment and hinge for the cover,

I have the same problem with a r927 Photosmart camera.

  • lynnbell1 Dec 15, 2008

I have done the firmware updating.. resetting.. holding the button down until my finger went numb and checked for corrosion... nothing worked. I contacted HP and they said they would repace the camera.. now they won't honor what they said.. for two weeks they kept telling me the camera was sent by UPS . BS... now even after talking to a supervisor all i get is .. buy the upgrade camera R927 for $259.89 - NOT!! and you can still use the docking bay but the R817 is not fixable and useless.. so throw it out. What a waste of my time and money. I will never trust another product from them again..and the service was very disrepectful.

FYI - HP is getting out of camera's all together. So Beware!! They even verified this with me on the phone.

This will be my last HP Product I buy and will be leaving a BBB message as well. Hope everyone else can get it to work.. its sad, I liked that camera.

Okay. I had the same problem with the "charging flash" business. The firmware 'upgrade' didn't even work... Here's what I did: Reset the camera using the 'reset switch' BUT do not take out the battery (leave it in). Presto! no more "charging flash"!

HP tells you to take the battery out: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c00881386&cc=us&lc=en&dlc=en&product=437509 which doesn't make any sense...

Try resetting the camera. This worked for Me. The directions are at hp.com. Basically you open the battery love, remove the battery and SD card, then push the point of a straightened Paper gently through the reset hale located new the battery compartment and hinge for the cover.

I have the same problem when the camera sits unused for a long time. Hold the button down - it'll say "charging flash" - and keep it held until it takes a picture. Once I had to hold it for about 10 minutes.

I have a Dewalt work light. DC528. I haven’t used it for a while and now that I want to, it won’t work. I’ve charged the battery and bought and replaced new bulbs. Any ideas?

If the battery is really being fully charged the connections are probably dirty but if the battery has been left discharged for a while it could now be faulty.

A faulty battery can often be recognised by the unusually short time charging takes and sometimes an extraordinarily lengthy time.

A voltmeter should be used to check the battery...

Camileo P10 charging problem

I had the same problem with the P10 not charging via USB, I purchased mine second hand so it came with no charger. I assumed it would charge by the USB cable but it did not, the red light flashes but doesn't charge. Luckily I have an external battery charger for a different camera i got some years ago that takes a similar battery , the P10 battery didn't fit properly so I had to place it at a 45 degree angle into the charger making sure the outer contacts were lined up properly and taped it into place. After an hour it was fully charged and the camera is working fine. The charger is a 4.2 volt charger. New external chargers can be picked up on ebay cheaply

My finepix s3400 will not turn on. I've tried almost everything and I'm really annoyed. Is there something i can do to fix it?

Mine wont turn on either, the battery is fully charged and inserted properly. I can tell this as the pre-flash light comes on but nothing else, the only way to get the pre-flash light off again is to remove the battery.

What does charging flash on photosmart m537 mean?

The flash gun needs to have a high charge available before it can flash - this can take a few seconds to charge fully ready to give off a full flash "flash" As batteries get older and uncharged - it takes longer to reach the correct charge on the flash
Hope that helps

When ever i take a picture, the orange light turns on acting like its going to take a picutre but it doesnt. When i take it off flash, it takes the picture.

The orange light blinking means the flash is charging, once the light goes off you can go ahead take picture with flash. Your light keeps blinking because the flash is not ready.
Try with fully charged batteries. If it won’t work, you may have an open fuse or something wrong with the flash circuit.
