I'm giving you the same info as previous inquiries. Take a look here, problems are explained- unfortunately they don't suggest any easy fixes. http://www.dataclinic.co.uk/data-recover... These external drives, according to this site, and my own limited experience, are merely a standard drive in a housing with the proper adaptive circuitry for USB/Firewire connection. A couple of possibilities: open the housing, check the connections to the drive. I've seen one drive where the IDE interface cable wasn't seated properly. If you have some tech savvy, you could remove the drive and hook it up in a standard desktop PC, then see if it can be accessed. If what the above link explains is the problem with your drive, a simple solution looks bleak. You might also look on the 'net for drive diagnostic software. If you do open the case, note the drive brandname (Western Digital, Maxtor etc) and go to their respective website and download their diag. software. Unfortunately, none of this may help you get your data.

Try connecting the LaCie to another computer. If this still does not work then the LaCie is faulty.

My LaCie hard drive is listed in preferences but it does not boot. Your suggestions?

Have you ensured the Lacie HDD is bootable? IMC, external drives that does not contain boot files or not-formatted in bootable mode cannot boot your device.

Try formatting your Lacie drive into bootable mode. Right click -> Format -> Check "make device bootable" and click start. THis shoudl help.

If I try and format my LaCie drive through my computer its capacity shows as 9.99 MB why is that if I do format it (NTFS) will it have the correct capacity of 250G

You may have two or more partitions on this hard drive. If you delete all the partitions and then format the hard drive then you will have the full unformatted 250 Gb capacity.

Computer will not boot with Lacie Desktop Hard Disk connected.

You can enter the bios on bootup by pressing a special key to force your computer to go into BIOS mode. What key this is varies by computer, often it is F8, F10, sometines F11. Anyway, use the key for your computer, and change to boot modus to not first boot from USB.

What kind of beep is that? Anything similar to these sounds: http://datacent.com/hard_drive_sounds.php ?
Most likely the spindle got stuck. That's really bad.

Can't access my lacie external hard drive

I would first plug it in to a different PC, this will tell you if the problem is the Lacie or Windows Vista.
if it works on a different PC then remove it from Device manager or go to the Lacie website for Vista updates.

If it does not work on a different PC then there are 3 possibilities
1. the drive got cleared data lost
2. the enclosure is bad (I would bet on this)
3. the drive is bad

purchase a USB enclosure, remove the drive and install it in the new enclosure plug in and test.

Hope this helps
