You can unlock it by simply connecting it to the computer that it was
originally loaded from. iTunes will unlock the iPod for you, but it
will not
reset iPod password. Of course, as long as
you don’t need to lock it again, that should be okay. The iPod will
not lock automatically — it only does so if you specifically select the
“lock screen” option.
There are several hacks and workarounds out there that will
supposedly let you clear out the password by editing files in the
iPod’s control directories through disk mode access, but I have never
been able to consistently reproduce these, particularly on more recent
firmware versions.
The only sure-fire way to actually remove the password entirely is to perform a “restore” on your iPod, which will
erase everything on it,
basically returning it to factory settings. If you’re using
automatic sync, however, it should be almost trivial to reload it from
iTunes, although it will take a bit of time.
