Ps2 slim, disc won't spin. I've had it apart & the laser traverses in, red beam comes on for a split sec, lens kisses the disc then nothing. The disc doesn't spin.Tried cleaning lens with alcohol. Any ideas?

I'm a bit confused now as I have recieved different advice, see below, from another site. I would appreciate your thoughts. Thanks.
I am 99% sure it is not the laser, as I have been fixing PS2's for a while, and the symptoms you suggest indicate a drive chip failiure. It may be the hub, but I doubt it.I'm a bit confused now as I have recieved different advice, see below, from another site. I would appreciate your thoughts.

Re:
If your PS2 slim console is chipped for playing fake games then try it by replacing the modification IC otherwise replace the lens with new one and your problem should be solved.
Just as the older Playstation 2 systems, the slim is no different. Faulty lasers. So how do you know which laser to purchase? There are 3 different lasers we've seen for the slim ps2. The PVR802W, which is manufactured by Mitsumi. The KHM-430 which is manufactured by Sony and the SPU laser which is manufactured by Philips. If you have a KHM430 you can replace it with the PVR802W and vice versa. The philips laser operates at a different voltage and you can only replace it with another Philips laser. So here's how to tell which laser you have! refer to image below Check this site you can get a new lens from here.

No problem about model no: because it is not compulsory that in all SCPH-70003 model you will get only one type of lens so you have to just check it out which type (PVR802W, KHM-430, 3170SPU) is yours lens, after selecting particular type you can confirm it with the seller before purchasing. No problem about model no: because it is not compulsory that in all SCPH-70003 model you will get only one type of lens so you have to just check it out which type (PVR802W, KHM-430, 3170SPU) is yours lens, after selecting particular type you can confirm it with the seller before purchasing.

The disc is most likely rubbing on the laser lens. The lens is held on rails which is held up by rubber boots that may have came loose and/or popped up forcing the laser lens to close to the disc. Make sure disc tray is aligned properly as well.
Hi guys,
Well, there is 2 switch. one at the back left of the cd tray and one one the reset /power switch.
both sitch have to be close in order for the disk to spin.
If you try this dont forget to put a disk on the spindle as you will start the laser. this is for your safety.
then, if the disk does not spin, then you can try replacing the laser. or at least verify the ribbon cable that is hook to it. if the ribbon cable is not well inside the plug the laser might move but again the disk won t spin.
it is related to each other, the PS2 seem to verify the laser prior to start the spindle so what ever happend to the laser affect the spindle.
and then, if you buy a new laser lens, don't forget to remove the soldering bridge. it is a small ball that is use to avoid static while shiping the lens.
most of the seller will include a small peace of paper with procedure and also there is web site with picture of this soldering bridge.
I replace some of them, and I have to say that the small plastic lock for the ribbon cable to the lens has been an issue and the soldering bridge another one.
but I got most of the PS2 back and running by replacing the laser.
I hope this will help you.
You got a problem with the lasers data getting back to the Motherboard.
One of these could be your problem
Laser lens is melted. Look at the lens with a magnifying glass to see if it or its supporting frame is melted. REplace the laser in this case.
The ribbon Cable going from the Laser to the motherboard is damaged or loose.
Your laser is burned out. Press the two interlock to override the door being open, to see if the laser even lights up. 2 switches, one at rear left corner, one behind the On/reset switch.
Your Laser is dirty and needs cleaning look at it with a magnifying Glass to make sure you got it clean. Use Q-tip and window glass cleaner, not alcohol.
ok...well all of you people are just **** him!
the actual problem is that you probably dropped the ps2 and the case lid got a bit lose......
what you have to do (if you dont want to buy a whole ps2 case again) is tap the ps2 on the top of the lid when it goes into the cd browser screen and it will work perfectly fine
just make sure you dont tap i too hard or else we will have another problem...lol!
Hi NateQ,
Sorry about no one paying attention to your problem for so long.
I just got started about a month ago. I have been repairing video Game consoles for over a decade though.
Your problem is that your slim has a melted down laser and lens assembly. The unit is dirty. You will need a new disc drive and a thorough cleaning to get it back in service.
The problem about the power light is due to excessive dust buildup shorting out the components on the motherboard. The video output is also comprimised by dust and dirt.
The disc spinning is possibly comprimised by hair wrapped around the disc drive spindle.
If you want, I can thoroughly detail clean your PS2 slim and replace the disc drive for $38 plus shipping both ways.

is this the big ps2 or slimif the big one does it say disc read eror or something is yes the lens might be dirty so if you want to void the ps2 open it up screws under rubber tabs then open the drive where disc goes then lightly clean the lens with a cloth and try it then
also does this happen with all the games or just one or two
Thanks for the reply. Can anyone tell me where I can get a replacement lens from?
