I turn the tv on and get no sound or picture. The light goes on but i took the lamp out and tried it on my buddies simular tv and it works fine.
Is there something else i can do before spending alot of money bringing it to a tech.

Re:
Obvious your power supply internal supply blown a fuse or in shut down mode due to short. I guess since you have a light the 5v supply is working but power supply makes many voltages to work your set properly probable at least 5 diffent voltages. one or more maybe shorted ...shutting down the power supply's higher voltages.
it gonna take a tech to fix it.
good luck

TV Repair Help for a TV With a Black No Image on the Screen ...I Have A Sanyo TV I Can Hear But Black Screen Im 14 And Dont Know What To Do ! .... power button the power light goes from red to green, the screen flashes on then goes black ....Troubleshooting LCD Backlight Failure Samsung LNT-4066 ...
if u take out the lamp the green light will flash ,its not detecting a lamp at all.a bad lamp is being detected before you took it out.u will have to replace the lamp before u get a picture again
Sounds like the ballast has gone out. Samsung recommends replacing the smps board(power supply board) when you replace the ballast because it is the smps that takes out the ballast. replacing just the ballast ,machine may work ok for a short time but will destroy the new ballast fairly quickly.
Look carefully at the front lights. Usually when these sets shutdown they have a blink code on either the standby light or the lamp light. Update this with those counts. In the meantime, you may be seeing a problem with heat. If the lamp area gets too hot, the set will shutdown the lamp. Once the area is cool again, the lamp will fire.
Update this and we'll hopefully fix the both of them.

I had the same exact problem.
I removed the bulb and cleaned it. There is a small screen at the top of the bulb and it was covered with dust. Once it was cleaned I replaced the bulb and it solved the problem.
