Last night our eight month old Sony TV started experiencing multiple problem including random shutdowns, no response to remote control, no menu etc. The red light on the bottom LHS is flashing 8 times. This is our second Sony TV is less than 12 months that has broken and we hardly ever use it. Any ideas? The night before we were getting white light showing from the top of the screen but thought this was related to the dvd we were playing at the time.
Eight flash indicates a protection to horizontal circuit. Might be a main board fault. It will be best to contact any service technician to make it confirm. It you're sound in electronics, check the link given here. http://electronicshelponline.blogspot.com/. It has blinking codes and fault detection procedure to many brand TVs, Pull up older posts there. See them either by pull up posts by its left side bar, or see it in 'Timeslide' option.

A service technician arrived at my home this morning and infromed me that 13 blinks indicates a bad LCD panel. His quote to repair it was approximately $500 more than the TV initially cost. I contacted Sony support directly, and they have agreed to replace the TV, since it is less than 30 days out of warranty. The KDL40V3000 has apparently been dicontinued so they are replacing with a KDL40V4100(factory reconditioned). I know this won't necessarily help others with the same problem, but if your warranty ended recently enough they will probably work with you to mitigate the expense.

Try leaving the TV unpugged for 30 minutes so the TV can reset itself.
If that doesn't work, most likely the TV has a power supply related problem. The most common thing to go out is the circuit board that supply power to the screen. Commonly called a Backlight Inverter Board.
I can't say it's 100% the problem because I can't actually look at the tv over the internet.
If by chance the TV is still under warranty, go that route.
If not under warranty and If you have some electronic experience, you can purchase a Service Manual over the internet and diagnose the source of the problem and fix it by soldering in the new part. The Service Manual will give you flashing red light codes, circuit diagrams, test points, and part# lists. Usually, cost under $20.
I hope I shed some light on the subject for you.
