I have a DEll Laptop & my Combo Drive Cannot Read Few DVDs'

Hi, i hvae a dell laptop and my combo drive cannot read all the dvd's. only 10% of the DVD's that i buy can be read in the combo drive. i think so there is some problem with the softwares installed...

This is unlikely to be a software problem unfortunately sry :( From experience I would say the laser/photo quadrant detector in ya Combo is damaged or faulty these Combo drives seem to have this Ahem .. weakness.. The DVD's are fairly easy to replace.. perhaps ya may find one on Ebay?

You need atleast a DVD-ROM drive. You can get a drive that burns DVD+r,-r,+rw,-rw. Either will be fine to play dvds. You can try newegg.com,tigerdirect.com,directron.com,geeks.com.

Computer does not read CDs, but does read DVDs. The drive makes this repeated noise as if it is trying to read it, but never does.

This is a problem with the reading lens in your DVD combo drive. Suggestions: AT YOUR OWN RISK
Get a lens cleaner CD (Best Solution). If you dont have one grab a cue tip and some rubbing alcohol and dip the cue tip in it. Dab it a bit so it's not soaking wet with the alcohol. Then open dvd ram drive's trap and rub the laser lens with the cue tip. Test now.

If al fails, you probbaly need to get your drive replaced if its still inder warranty.

if it has a DVDRW drive the yes.........if CDRW/DVD then no.....but it can read dvds

No Sir, Acer Aspire 4330 comes with different Optical Media Loadings, ( You can see a pdf file here )
Like;

DVD/CD-RW combo drive
8X DVD-Super Multi double-layer drive.

But you have the first one, The Combo drive not the super so you can READ both CD's DVD's but can write only CD's.

DELL laptop does not read blank DVDs

the combo drive you listed above is a cd-rw/ DVD-ROM....meaning that it will play and burn cd, cd-r, and cd-rw disks. the dvd rom will only be able to play dvd-rom and dvd-r disks providing they are in the proper format. check that the disk in question is not a dvd-rw or (+2) disk. the drive will not recognize that a disk is in the drive if the disk isnt compatable. try a dvd movie, if that works then a dvd-r, if that works then try a dvd-rw +1. if the last option doesnt work then you will have to stick with the dvd-rom and dvd-r, or purchase a dvd-rw drive to install.

Playing a DVD-R

Your should have 24x CD-RW/DVD (Sony) with your model, if drive is reading well you may be missing DVD rendering software try Power DVD or WINDVD.but still you can only read with the current dive you have its a combo drive that can only read DVD and burn CD's, Recording DVD is not possible.
