Dvd burner i actually just had to use this to get to the email screen. My burner is a philips dvd8801. it reads but will not burn no matter what program i use. I was told to flash my drive but cant figure out that either

Hello ublkn5, i have the solution for you. The philips dvd8801 is a Benq 1650.Go to the BenQ website and run their firmware check program and it will recognized your drive as a Benk 1650 drive and it will indecate the latest firmware for it. SO you have to grab BQFlasher from here: http://quikee.cdfreaks.com/BQFlasher.rar Grab the official firmware upgrade from BenQ (BCHC),unzip both, open BQFlasher, select the official BenQ BCHC.exe file with it, and flash away. hope this will fix your problem. best regards AMINE

Is your DVD drive a Combo DVD ROM and CD Read/writer? If so it cannot burn DVD only reads DVDs and read and burn CDs.
If the program cannot find a DVD burner then either the burning software cannot support that model DVD burner ot the DVD burner is faulty.
To test the DVD burner, remove it and install it into another computer to test the burner to see if is faulty.

The drive wont read any burnt dvds, and ones that have stuff on it show up as blank cds. itll read actual dvd games though just fine.

The actual dvd were also burned somewhere, did you burn your stuff correctly, try playing those cd on another computer.
CLEAN, WASH YOUR DVDs CAREFULLY DON'T DESTROY THEM.
It doesn't look like your dvd drive is faulty.

My Philips DVD8421 burner will not recognize a blank DRD-R disc.

Ok, the reason is quite simple. The Philips DVD8421 does not recognise the DVD-R format.Not all DVD/CD burners read all discs. It does recognise DVD+R though. So all you need to do is use these discs instead. This should solve your problem.

Philips dvd burn not burning?

1. see to it that you have set your burning software to write to the disk.
2. try to use it on a cd, if it finishes the job, something is wron with your dvd drive.
3. make sure that the drive you have is really a dvddrive and not a cd drive.
4. upgrade youe burning software.

I'd first try another burning programming to see if it works. if not I'd try the drive on a different pc to ensure its not the drive. if the drive works on another pc then i will reload the os and dell recommended if it doesnt works i'd returen if for warrenty if it has any or i'd replace the drive myself :)

The answer is what you profess. The drive can burn CD's, read CD's and also read DVD's. Everytime I try and burn a DVD I have an unrecognized drive and the properties always show no disk: The drive burns CD's ie;music, but cannot burn DVD it can only read DVD like you say!
