My E10 doesn't work - i reset it 100 times a day - just black screen and "Player update required". If I connect the USB - "Emergency USB v1.40" - my computer even can't find it.
Player won't turn on or off, it's just stuck with a black screen and white writing which says:
"Player update required!!! Please refer to the manual" It has "v1.40"' in the bottom right hand corner of the screen as well.
I checked the manual and tried to 'initialise' the player like it said and that didn't work .. when I connected it to my computer a new message came up saying "Emergency USB" and the "v1.40" was still in the bottom right hand corner ...
I tried charging it in case the battery was flat or something but that didn't work ..Player won't turn on or off, it's just stuck with a black screen and white writing which says:

I took mine to JB Hi-Fi where I bought it from and they're sending it to the service centre for me ... if your 1 year standard warranty hasn't expired you can take it to the place you bought it from and they can ship it off for you and they log all your details and give you a number so you can call and check the status of the repairs ... that's the only thing that will solve the problem as far as I'm aware ... they need to actually replace parts in the iriver ...

If your PC does recognize the iRiver as a USB device/drive, there is an issue with the Hard Drive.
If your computer doesn't recognize the iRiver as a USB device/drive and can
read the files, there is an issue with the Circuitry in your e10.
Turn the lock off and
connect it to the usb port and press the reset button (small hole in
lower left of unit, use a small object like a paperclip. The screen should
change eventually to the "USB connected" screen. Disconnect the USB at
the PC to get the "Ok to disconnect" message. Pull out the usb cable
and hold down the "off" button. Eventually the unit will turn off. Turn it on and then off to verify it is working.
If nothing works, your iRiver needs to be returned to the manufacturer.
Software / Media Transfer
The E100 comes packaged with a disc containing iriver plus 3 media player, firmware updater, video converter, and Windows Media Player 11. If you have owned an iriver player, you are familiar with this software with the included iriver media player. This is a standard media player much like any other but has a few features catering to the iriver family of players, such as a firmware updater, ebook txt manager, and video converter. This media player is a bit different from Windows Media Player but still is straightforward and easy to use. If you don’t care for iriver’s media player you can always use any other MTP based media player to manage playlists and load your E100 since also included on the disc is a video converter and firmware updating utility.
If you don’t like to use media players to transfer the E100 will allow you to select either MTP or MSC transfer mode. This means it is drag and drop and also compatible with any OS. Drag and drop will work fine in MTP mode as well, but only if you are using Windows XP SP2 or Vista.
and the difference between e10 / e100 your guess is just as good as mine
Looks lo\ike the OS crashed in the player. It is probably asking for a restore procedure. It is located on the CD or in the setup program that came wiht the Iriver.
There are 2 conditions related to the e10 Emergency USB message.
1. If your PC does NOT recognise the iriver as a USB device/drive, there is an issue with the Hard Drive.
2. If your PC DOES recognise the iriver as a USB device/drive and can read the files, there is an issue with the Circuitry in your e10.
In either case, your iriver needs to be returned to the manufacturer. If in warranty you can get this repaired at no cost (of course).
