The same problem, too. (I saw people from Czech republic during my vacation in Bulgaria with the same problem as mine). Problem arise in moment when battery is weak and you're trying to switch between two positions (display-viewfinder). Once, when it has happened before, problem disappeared from itself, but now, nothing. Please, if someone knows solution, let me know.

Please check the rotary switch on the camera is in the correct position. The viewfinder and monitor settings are very close together! When I look through the eye hole of the Canon Rebel t1i, the view and numbers of the eye hole are blurry even though everything is auto focused, and when I take the picture, it's clear. Why is the eye hole...

There's a diopter adjustment knob just to the right of the viewfinder. Turn it while looking through the viewfinder at a blank wall until the numbers in the viewfinder appear sharp. This knob allows the camera to adjust for individual eyesight.

Dark and blurry

It will clear instantly with a fresh battery.

The viewfinder screen has an LCD overlay and even when the camera is switched off the screen uses a small amount of power. When the batteries are flat the screen is unpowered, the crystals in the LCD align randomly to both darken and blur the viewfinder image.

LCD screen not on when camera on?

You hit the EVF/LCD button near the "eye hole". When this is pressed it will cycle viewing through either the optical viewfinder or the LCD screen. This display is controlled independantly on each of the modes: shooting, or viewing. This is so you can set the camera to view pics before taking them from the optical viewfinder and view pics once taken from the LCD or vice-versa.

Viewfinder is black

If you're asking about the electronic viewfinder (where you put your eye to the back of the camera), that can be turned on/off via the SEL button at the button right corner of the viewfinder. In fact, the LCD screen staying on/off is selected with the same button. Press it three times to cycle through the various modes of "viewing". If the viewfinder or LCD stays off after cycling through the SEL button selections, I would say your camera needs to be serviced at a repair shop.

I hope this helps!

I see nothing in the Viewfinder...

The camera has a mirror lock up feature for cleaning the CCD sensor. You may have engaged it. Check your manual about this function

Taking photos

You can only use the viewfinder. If you want to use the LCD, you need to buy an SLR with "live view." However, you'll soon get used to using the viewfinder, it's the best way to shoot unless you're holding the camera somewhere you can't get your eye to the viewfinder.
