The cd drive operates in both manual and through the computer until I insert a disc. When I try run the disc, it operates for about 5-10 seconds and then stops and doesn't recognize the disc. I have tried several discs with the same result each time.
Hi,
i have personally faced this issue before, sometimes it does happen that CD/DVD ROM's go bonkers in reading discs, mostly bcoz either the CD/DVD is damaged (scratched etc.) or the lens has gotten dirty.if it is a lens issue use a lens cleaner (lots r avail. in the mrkt) and try again if not im afraid ur CD/DVD is concked
May be the problem with lens in cd drive try to clean the lens using lens cleaner cd., (dust in the lens) or we can assume it is error correction for optical drive

There are two ways to open the CD/DVD drive door if the button just below the drive tray does not work. Go to My Computer and right click on the drive and click on Eject. If this does not work then you can manually open the CD/DVD drive tray by - Straighten a paper clip and gently insert it into a tiny hole below the drive tray next to the Eject button. Push the paper clip gently until the drive tray pops out, then pull the tray until it is fully out, then you can remove the CD/DVD disc. If you still having problem opening with the Eject button, then the CD/DVD drive is faulty and needs replacing.

Insert your system recovery disc to repair your startup.
1. Change your Bios to boot from disc: When
your computer powers on, hit F2 (on some computers, F8 on others). Use
your arrow keys and move to the right to your BOOT option. Hit the down
arrow until you select your CD/DVD drive. Look at the bottom of your
screen, and it should say to change the option hit F7 or F8. Use the
specified keys, and move your CD/DVD drive above your hard-drive. Save
your settings.
2. Boot from your disc. Insert your system
recovery disc and restart your computer. Let the recovery disc load. If
the option comes up to hit any button to boot from CD/DVD, then hit any
button. Once it loads, it should come to a spot where it wants your
language. Select your language, then select the option "Startup Repair". Click on it, and let
it repair the startup. If it automatically starts correcting your startup then great! If not, then select your operating system from the list and click the Repair Startup option. Restart your computer, and hopefully it will boot
from your hard-drive correctly.
Hope this works.
P.S.
If it continues to boot from your recovery disc, then using the same
method in step 1, go to your bios, and move your CD/DVD drive below your
hard-drive.
If you are saying D drive is your CD/VDVD drive? If you are installing from CD/DVD drive then suddenly stop the installation/setup/loading you must check your disc drive. To check your cd/dvd drive insert a cd or dvd cleaner and start cleaning most of the cleaner has a movie inside of the disc and run for about 10 minutes. Then try again installing/setup/loading the program to your computer. If its still the same, replace your CD/DVD drive with a new cd/dvd drive because your cd/dvd drive is need to be replace. Have a nice day
The iMac (Slot loading) computer's disc eject mechanism is electrical instead of mechanical. To eject a CD-ROM disc at startup that contains system software, press the mouse button until the computer ejects the disc. If the disc does not contain system software, wait for the iMac to start up and drag the disc icon to the Trash.
If either of these steps fails to eject the disc, push the drive's manual eject button with a small, blunt object like a paper clip. This button is located to the right of the CD/DVD slot as shown in Figure 1. The computer must be turned on to eject a disc in this manner.
Figure 1 Manual eject button
Once the disc is ejected, it extends just beyond its center hole so you can remove it from the drive. If the disc fails to eject, while holding in the paper clip, use another CD to gently push against the inserted CD. This gentle pressure may help to release the inserted CD.
Important: After ejecting the disc with the manual eject button, you must restart the iMac in order for the CD-ROM or DVD-ROM drive to work. DONT FORGET TO VOTE
Double-click the My Computer icon on the desktop (or click Start and My Computer in Microsoft Windows XP).
Right-click the CD, CD-RW, or DVD drive , and then click Eject .
Restart the computer and press the EJECT button on the front of the drive when the first screen appears (before Windows launches). If the drive door opens this way but does not open in Windows, another software program is taking control of the CD drive. Try shutting down or configuring any programs that write discs or monitor the CD drive.
If the door still will not open, do the following:
Close all programs and shut down the computer.
Unplug the PC from the power outlet and remove the battery.
Locate the manual release hole in the front faceplate of the optical drive tray. This is a small hole under the door that is a little bigger than the diameter of a paper clip. The location of the manual eject hole will vary.
Insert a straightened paperclip into the manual release hole until resistance is felt.
Once the resistance is felt, keep pushing the paper clip until the drawer comes out about a quarter of an inch.
Remove the paper clip and gently pull out the drawer until the disc is accessible.
there will be a small hole on the outer cover of your disc drive. Straighten a paper clip out and gently insert it through the hole until the drive opens.
If you have more than 1 CD/DVD Drive then place it in the other.
If not, then restart your computer, ensure you have the latest drivers for your CD Drive (if any) and make sure that the CD Drive can read other disks!
If that doesn't work then the Disk may be faulty (suggest get a replacement)
