Hello,

It is possible that the lens contacts are dirty. To fix this:

  • Get a pencil with an eraser on the end (make sure it is a good eraser and not an old pencil where the eraser has gotten hard).
  • Detach the lens from the camera
  • Hold the lens so that the gold contacts are pointing down and lightly erase the exposed surface, cleaning them of any hand oil that might have gotten on them.
  • Do the same thing with the gold contacts inside the camera body. This is a bit harder but doable (make sure to hold the camera so lens opening points down so no gunk falls in).
  • You may want to use a lens cloth to 'dab' at the contacts afterwards rather than potentially blowing eraser bits into the camera.
If this doesn't work, here is some info from Canon support.

To isolate the cause of the issue, we suggest that you do the following:
  1. Turn off the camera.
  2. Remove the lens, battery, and CF card.
  3. Allow the camera to sit without power for approximately 20 minutes.
  4. Insert a fully charged battery, and turn on the camera.
  5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.
Does the “ERR 99′ message appear? If it does, then the camera should be serviced. If it does not, then please proceed to the next set of steps:
  1. Turn off the camera.
  2. Insert the CF card.
  3. Turn on the camera.
  4. Format the CF card in the camera.
  5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.
Does the “ERR 99′ message appear? If so, then the CF card is the most likely source of the issue. Try using a different card. If the message does not appear, please complete the following steps:
  1. Turn off the camera.
  2. Clean the lens contacts by gently rubbing them with a pencil eraser or soft cloth. Be careful that you do not let any debris fall into the camera body.
  3. Reattach your lens.
  4. Turn on the camera.
  5. Depress the shutter button as you would to take a picture.
If the “ERR 99′ message only appears when one particular lens is
attached, then that lens should be examined by a service technician. If you see the “ERR 99′ with a different Canon lens attached, then the camera should be serviced.

Hope this helps,

Chris

Canon 350D error 99

Err 99 could mean several different things, such as... Memory Card
Lens
Lens contacts....

A few things you can try.
Remove the memory card an enable "shooting with out memory card" and see if you still get the error. If it works your memory card may be bad.
Try another lens if you can
Clean the lens contacts with a pencil eraser (be careful not to get eraser dust in the camera body or in the lens)
I have heard Canon recommend upgrading the camera's firmware (go to Canon's website todownload
the latest firmware and follow Canon's instructions for the upgrade).
I saved the worst for last, Err 99 could be related to the shutter failing which would mean a trip to Canon for repair.
Good Luck

Camera won't auto focus - error 99 message comes on

I have read quite a lot about this infamous Error 99 on the Internet. Rather than try to summarise or duplicate the information here, I'm going to point you to someone who's already done just that, from bitter experience, I think! There's a very comprehensive essay about the various possible causes of Error 99 here (follow link).

Err 99 shows up on screen when I try to take a photo

This is usually a lens error. Take the lens off and clean the contacts on the camera body and lens where they meet with a cotton swab lightly dampened with rubbing alcohol.
