My camera did this after lending my camera and cord to somone else to upload pictures onto their computer, and then when i tried on my own it wouldnt let me.
all i had to do though was take the memory card out and put it back in.

Mine did the same thing however I noticed that the error does not appear when the XD card is not inserted in the card. I opened the bottom door and used a thumb tack to hit the little trip wire (located on the far right back corner)to trick the camera into thinking that the door was shut allowing the camera to turn with the door open. I then put another tack into the card slot with the XD card and pushed it foward. This allowed the connection to work. It took me about 20 tries to get it to work but I finally got my pics off.

Try NOT connecting your camera to your computer.

The best way to transfer pictures from your camera to your computer involves removing the memory card from the camera and plugging it into a card reader (either built-in to the computer or connected via USB). This is likely to be faster than connecting the camera to the computer, and won't run down your camera's batteries.

Once the card is plugged in, it will appear to your computer as a removable drive. You can use the operating system's drag&drop facility to copy pictures from the card to the computer's hard drive, the same way you copy any other files. Or you can use any photo management program such as Picasa.

Communication error when uploading pictures on computer

I had the same problem. My problem was that there were more than 1,000 images stored on the memory card. Once I deleted some of the images from the camera memory card, I was able to download pictures again.
