Cassette holder does not want tpo close. Camcorder was working ok when suddenly it showed that I must eject tape. I did and then there was some loose tape, I fixed it, tried putting the tape back in again and that is when the problem occurred. I can not get to close the casette holder door.
Try inserting another tape first. If the trouble is still there,Defective mechanism, a stucked mechanism is present. camcorder are smart it can detects error and shuts down itself for safety. earlier models dominoes the defect if the user is not quick enough to react when something goes wrong with the camera. You need professional service to fix it.

I had a similar issue where the tape bay would not lock in and engage the motor mechanism to load the tape. I removed the battery from the unit and let it stand for approximately a minute then reinserted the battery. The tape drawer closed first without a tape then reopened with no issue. I then inserted a new tape with no issue. I guess it needed a hard reboot.
I have the zr850 which I have used less than a dozen times, and it does the same thing as you describe. Was told by canon tech people to try a maxell brand tape and a head cleaner tape. Have not tried their sugestion yet. camera is 3 months old.
