Hello Anonymous, you can have dirty heads and guides, also the internal key Rec-Play could be wrong
You should do a full maintenance of the cassette system

Is there a way to record something on a dvd from the tv?

Which model do you have? Some of the GoVideo DVD/VCR units are only DVD players so you can only record to the VHS tape. If you have a DVD writer version, you may find it tedious but doable. First load the blank DVD and set the Disc Record mode (you will see an on-screen prompt) for VR (this lets you do more editing of the video) or Video (this choice is compatible with more players). Then set the REC Mode by pressing that button repeatedly (SP (2 hours per disc), LP or XP(1 hour per disc). For one-touch recording (recording the current program that you are receiving on the device), select your Channel and Audio track then press REC. If you press REC several times, you will set when the recording stops. Otherwise it will not end until you press STOP.

For timed recording, press Timer Record. Then go through all the items to set the DVD recording information. Record mode, Channel, start and stop times. The left and right arrows let you change menu sections and the up down scroll through the settings. Press Enter to save the programmed recording. Then press Return. Make sure blank media (or with enough room for the programmed item) is in the machine. On some units, you will need to turn off the machine for the Timed Recording to work.

For recording from external sources, press Input instead of Channel.

For any recording, leave a bit of extra space on the disc to Finalize the DVD if you will want to play the disc on other players.

I hope this helps.

When i put a tape in it ejects it..then a tape with a slash appears on the screen

you are prohibited from recording on thips tape. This is because the red tab on the side of the tape that faces you when you are inserting the tape inside the camera has been put in 'SAVE' position . to be able to record o the tape you need to use your fingernail to slide the red tab to the 'REC' position.

Ive extracted the following article for you from wilkepedia to help you understand this issue:
Tape and recording protection
250px-8mm_cassette_erase_tab.jpg magnify-clip.pngThe write-protect switch (right) prevents accidental erasure. .
To prevent the recording on the tape from being erased, there is a small write-protect tab that can be moved to one of two positions, labeled "REC" and "SAVE". Comparing the sliding tab to a door, the tape is in the "REC" position is when the "door" is open and the "SAVE" position when it is closed. (Not all tape cases have markings for this information!) The tape can only be recorded on (or recorded over) when this tab is in the "REC" position. This is an improved version of the VHS write-protect tab, which prevents erasure after it has been (permanently) broken off.

I have an Olympus WS-311M but cant record after playing back file

Unfortunately that is not possible with this recorder to be able to replay a part of a recording and record over it. If you pause it will just allow you to continue from the point where the device was stopped. You might want to check out the DS-2300 or the DS-2400 model recorders as those devices have the ability to do what you are asking.
