The television is powering itself off to standby mode when turned on. The monitor/screen comes on for a few seconds and then powers itself off. the stadby light on the monitor/screen flashes seven times.It appears that it may need resetting

Fault with its main board. Short circuited component/s at it. Contact any service technician; or the authorized service center. If you wish to get some details; check the site linked here. If so, a software [firmware] update too might be necessary.
There is a Post on the Sony Support site which I hadn't previously found. Basically there is a software bug which has come about apparently due to Freeview transmission changes. In order to stop the the machine locking up disable the 'Automatic System Update' option. A Sony centre will apparently apply a software fix to properly resolve the issue, fine if with warranty period, maybe pricey if not. I will get the fix but haven't yet done so as the workaround of disabling the System Update option works.
