SOURCE: hard drive compatible with gateway 300xl desktop computer

I think there is no SATA ports on its mother board. So SATA Hard disks cannot be used on this system.

Without any dobt you can use PATA (the one that we used to see everywhere) can be used. There is no question of compatibility; any size 80,or 160 GB or even more can be used.

SOURCE: My GT5220 is less than two years old and the

If you have the original Mobo in hand and feel a little curious about how at only two years old it doesn't work anymore, consider this. Inspect the large electrolytic capacitors on the board. (those round cylindrical things that stand up) for swelling. The tops should be perfectly flat. If they show swelling (domed) they have failed, and replacing them will likely bring it back. It takes good soldering skills and at least a 60-watt (100-watt preferred for this job because of the amount of heat required) temperature-regulated soldering iron, and the replacement parts. The bonus to this is you will not need to re-install your windows system. You might even feel a little like you have beat the system.

Check all of the other connections all around where you was at. Sometimes it dont take much to knock one of them loose. Also take the chip backn out and take a pencil eraser and clean the contacts on the chip with it.

I removed the old memory and installed 4 1GB cards and the computer doesn't work? Help.

Adding new memory can be tricky. First the new memory has to be compatible with the motherboard.
By that I mean, you need to know how much memory the motherboard can max out at.Can it take only 2 GB or 4GB etc. And it has to be a match to what memory speed your motherboard can handle. If your motherboard takes DDR than you must put DDR in, if it takes DDR2 than you must put DDR2 in. Look at the old memory, and try to match all the numbers you find on it. Than look up the memory specs for the motherboard to find out how much it can take.
Any computer will not operate corecctly if the memory is the wrong kind, or installed wrong.

Should i get rid of this gateway

Before getting rid think twice. Because the value you for second selling is very low, Buying a new one is quite an asset. If the problem you had is minor i suggest to keep it otherwise (Problem with motherboard, processor) then get rid of it.
