Washer not spinning/draining and it's showing me a code (F21)

The F21 error on a Whirlpool Duet washer means the unit was draining slowly. This can be caused by a blocked outlet hose (kinked hose, for example), excessive suds from using non-HE detergent or too much detergent, blockages in the drain pump filter (coin catcher), or a problem with the pump.

You should be able to clear the error by pressing Pause/Cancel twice. Check your outlet hose. Then unplug the washer. Have a bucket handy to catch the water when you access the pump. Remove the toe panel from the bottom of the washer. There are three screws to remove; then you need to lift the panel slightly and pull it forward.Check the filter for foreign objects.

Test the washer by selecting a cycle and running it with no clothing or detergent. If the unit still fails, then the pump, pump motor or the pressure switch is bad. However, you should also check the wiring to the unit.

Push the pause/cancel button twice to clear your message. Then run through a rinse/spin cycle. Next try a normal load without any detergent. SUDS is usually from too much detergent. If this fails, checked the hose for kinks. Check connections and if all that fails, you will probably have to replace the pump. Good Luck!

The "F21" error code indicates it takes too long for water to pump out of the tub. This can be caused by using too much High Efficiency detergent or using too much of the wrong kind of detergent. This error code can also be caused by debris clogging the drain pump. Is the error continues after you clean the filter, then you will need to replace the drain pump with this new one.

I have the manual for this machine. Under "Code 21" it says the following:
"F21" (Drain Problem) Select STOP twice to cancel the cycle. Unplug washer or disconnect power. Check the following: Is the drain hose kinked? Is the drain hose frozen? Is the drain hose clogged? Is the drain hose more than 96" (2.4 m) above the floor? Plug in washer or reconnect power. Re-select cycle and press START. If the problem remains, call for service.
For "SUDS" code, the following:
"SUD" (Suds Routine) When excessive suds are detected, a suds routine automatically starts. This routine removes extra suds and assures proper rinsing of your garments. "SUD" is displayed during rinsing to inform you that Suds Routine was activated. Use only HE (High Efficiency) detergents.
Here is some more information that may help you as well:
"F" Codes other than F20, F21 and F22 Select STOP twice to cancel the cycle. Select DRAIN & SPIN if there is excessive water in the washer. Re-select cycle and press START. If the problem remains, call for service.

This means the water is not draining out like it should. I solved this problem initially on my washer (my drain pipe was clogged), but now (about 4 months later), I have a flashing F21 and 5d, because of a clog some- where. I can drain and rinse (after this cycle, the door will unlock), and the tub spins, but I can't complete a cycle. Lots of debris has come out with rinse water, but I still seem to have a clog somewhere. I can complete a wash load by manually switching the settings.

Check the drain line for kinks or obstructions. You can take a flashlight, remove the hose from the pump and look into the suction port of the pump. Check for anything clogging the pump. (like the occasional stray sock). Also check the pump impellers for broken or missing blades and ensure that the pump impeller spins freely. If any blades are broken/missing or if you cannot get the impeller to spin freely, the pump is defective and will need replaced. Hopefully it is just a clogged pump or drain line. In most cases this is simply caused by a clogged drain pump and all that is required is a good cleaning. Read through the instructions provided in the link on how to do this. Make sure the washer is unplugged while servicing any of the internal components.

If the problem persists, you may have a drain pump that is malfunctioning or is damaged. The manufacturer recommends replacing the pump if this is the case.
