Why sd card memory card is unusable

Are you sure you have an SD card (2GB or smaller)? The C653 will not work with higher-capacity SDHC cards.

I have bought a new memery card 4Gm and tried a old one that worked in another camera it says unusable

If all memory cards did not work then the fault is in your camera, it needs to be repaired.

My old memory card all of a sudden reads unusable, So i bought a new one...and it still says unusable... what do i do? I have only had the camera for 4 months

Try putting the new memory card into the camera and format the card. If the camera doesn't accept that it has a memory card turn the camera off remove the battery and then after about ten seconds put the battery back in and turn it on and see if you can format the new card again. You should always format the memory cards in the camera, even though there is a delete for single images leave them on the card and format the card. Always format the card in the camera not the computer.
By deleting single images in on the card while in the camera it sets up little partitions and pretty soon the memory card is rendered useless. Formatting in the computer writes a little program to the card which the camera can not read.
