Ok if you follow these steps you can't go wrong....
First off check everything on the stereo, mainly the fuse on the very back of it right by the wire harness. Secondly, you should be using a wire adapter harness in order to install this into your car. If you haven't cut the car harness yet, go out and buy a metra 70-1782. Best buy sells it for 20 bucks, as do most car stereo shops, it is a wire harness for a 1995 prizm. All you have to do is connect like colors to the stereo harness at your kitchen table, insulate them, and then plug it into the car. To eliminate problems, do not connect the illumination wires (orange in color). You must also check the fuses in the car, which should be under the drivers side dash, and also under the hood. When all of these are connected, turn the car on, and press the "src" button on the deck to turn it on, if it does not turn on, check your fuses again because you should be done. Also on kenwood decks there should be a tiny button that you can only press with a pin, sometimes on the faceplate and sometimes behind it. This is a reset button that will snap the deck out of whatever "trance" it is in. If you cut your factory harness off, let me know and I will explain as best I can how to hardwire it.
