I'm in the middle of replacing my defective DVD burner in my Acer Aspire 5003WLMi laptop, but I can't for the life of me get the optical drive out. Does anyone have any information on how to remove the defective drive? Thanks to all who can help :)
Found that acer optical drive removal require removal of key board , there is a screw located there that releases the drive when then pulls out easily.

Hi chris, best thing is to get hold of a manual but since NEC's support is not that good they don't provide them on their websites for download. but not to worry, generally you got 2 options from my experience i can confirm that the first one is the old drive is secured with a screw located in the back of the laptop underneath the drive itself if that's the case just unscrew it and release the old drive , the other option is you might need to strip the laptop down and unscrew the drive from inside the laptop i guarantee you these are the only ways manufacturers secure optical drives to laptops. hope this helps

sorry i meant ACER no NEC but both of them are as bad as eachother when it comes to customer support :)
hi chris if yours looks like that just pull it a bit harder as it's plugged in a socket and might take some persuasion to release try this and let me know how you get on
well done chris

Thanks for the help Atlasuk2007. I uploaded a picture which seems to have a locking screw for the optical drive, but even with the screw removed the drive's still good and stuck. Do you happen to know where I can find a guide on how to take the notebook apart? Acer isn't very good at offering things like that, so has anyone online my with notebook or a similar one written a guide? Thanks again.
Thanks atlas. Well, I reefed on the drive good and hard, and managed to yank it out. But, from the looks of the drive it appears to have had a hidden screw, accessible only by removing the keyboard. But I was able to pull the drive out without removing the screw, which resulted in a broken screw holder on the drive. Luckily my new drive doesn't have any securing screw like that so I won't have to take the notebook apart.
There will be a drawback with this however...my burner will not be secured to the notebook other than being plugged into the port...
Oops, well it appears the old drive has a plastic detachable bracket around it, which can be removed and attached to my new drive. So now my new drive can indeed be more secured. :)
