When testing the polarity of the vehicle's main power wires for remote starter installation; the run position is the vehicle running. The ignition, accessory and battery wires should read 12 volts in the RUN position. This same group of wires should read 12 volts in the ON position. The ignition, starter and battery wires should read 12 volts in the START position. The accessory and battery wires should read 12 volts in the ACC position. The battery wire should read 12 volts with the key OFF.
well this is what you do to check it to see if you bought a blown amp.
wire it into your car and then take a digital volt meter check to see if you have power and ground and remote turn on .
take the red lead and put it on the battery wire at amp and the black lead to the ground then see if you get 12volt to 14.4 use the amps ground for the black test lead if nothing you may have blown fuse or bad ground.
check the remote wire same way as about if you get 12 to 14.4 volt it works if not could be blown from radio or bad ground
checking the ground put the black meter lead on ground wire and the red lead on 12 volt power source if nothing a bad ground.
if your get voltage on the remote wire and battery wire and have good ground then you need to call the seller and get your money back ..
The constant 12 volt wire is yellow. The accessory ( switched 12 volt wire) is red. The blue (power antenna) and blue/white (remote amp turn on) are also switched 12 volt wires. Make sure that they are not being grounded.

If the burning smell is from the power supply then most likely a capacitor has blown in the switch mode power supply.
I would advise you purchase a new power supply, do not try and repair it, these mains devices can be dangerous if you don't have knowledge.
The dome light gets 12 volt battery power at all times. The door switch, when the door is opened, allows the current to flow to ground, and completes the circuit. The door switch allows the ground to be made. Measure for 12 volts at the wiring connector, and measure for direct short at the ground wire, with the door open. The Ground wire is white with a black tracer.

Check with a 12 volt light bulb of some sort. First test +12
volt wire to the chassis of the car. The bulb should
light. Then test +12 volt wire to the ground wire. If no
light then no ground is present.
I would definately suspect wiring. If you can use a volt meter. Put it on the b+ to ground and see what the reading is should be 12+ then try the ground to remote wire should be 12+. If it drops below 12 volts when car starts. Recheck wires for loose connection. Also double check the wire you have the remote wire connected to. You might even want to disconnect from the amplifier and use a jumper wire from the positive terminal on the amp to remote on the amplifier and see if it stays on then. If it stays on you will have to find the loose connection or find a different wire to get remote power.
