Try gently turning an knocking the cameras lens..i had the same problem an all it was,was the rubber protction guard had got stuck which is why the lens would not retract back into its position.so try twisting the lens gently or tapping it.well thats what i did

Not necessarily true. This problem is generally caused by dirt or sand getting into the lens worm gear. Try these in order: 1) turn off the camera, remove the flash card and batteries, then reinsert them. 2) turn the camera on and off with the AV cable inserted, 4) rap the camera with the palm of your hand, 5) gently pull on or push close the lens then try to restart. If all the above has not worked, AND if the A4XX camera is no longer under warranty, AND if this problem did not result from the camera being dropped, here's how to fix it, and it's relatively easy: http://homepage.mac.com/jpelling/page0/page0.html By the way, don't know Justin, but he did a very nice job showing how to open the camera case and clean out the grit and sand from the camera lens drive gear. Make sure you send him an email to thank him

The lens is bent or otherwise stuck inside the camera, unless you replace the lens, there is not much you can do i'm afraid

'Lens error please restart the camera' msg displaying

Lens errors are fairly common. Usually it's sand or grit interfering with the lens extension mechanism. Or the camera's been dropped with the lens extended. Or the camera has been powered on, but the lens had been blocked preventing its extension. Or the battery ran down with the lens extended ... Unfortunately, many cameras that fall prey to this can only be corrected by professional repair. But, here are some things that you can do that may correct it. They only seem to work for less than 40% of the lens errors, but if the camera is out of warranty, they're worth a try.

Problem with canon a420 digicam

A stuck shutter is another common failure mode for digital cameras. The symptoms of a stuck or "sticky" shutter are very similar to CCD image sensor failure. The camera may take black pictures (for shutter stuck closed), or the pictures may be very bright and overexposed, especially when taken outdoors (for shutter stuck open).

To confirm a stuck shutter, put the camera in any mode other than "Auto", and turn the flash OFF (you don't want to blind yourself for the next step). Next look down the lens and take a picture. You should see a tiny flicker in the center of the lens as the shutter opens and closes. If no movement is seen, then you likely have a stuck shutter. If so, please see this link for further info and a simple fix that may help.

Note that your camera will not be able to take 15 second exposures, as per the above "fix". Instead, place the camera in manual mode, turn off the flash, and take the exposures in a darkened room. This should give you a couple seconds, just enough time to open the battery door while the red and yellow lights are flashing.

What you are seeing is a generic error message, starting your camera again won't do anything unfortunately.

You need to replace the lens, we have your lens repair available on our site for about $75! If we can help please let us know.

Canon PowerShot A420

Elaine, did you accidentally hit the "Disp." button on the back of your camera (upper left button, just below the mode selection wheel). This button turns the LCD screen on or off while taking pictures to save batteries.

E 18 problem

the E18 means the lens system has a problem. I had it with my S2 and sometimes it worked, sometimes not. Eventually it stopped working. The only solution was sending it to repair, they changed the lens system.
