Press all of side buttons. Are they OK? Many times they are stacked in and are blocking others. Try to press them a bit harder than usual. If the problem is still present, send it to the service.

Samsung d900 buttons are not working

I suspect sand has got inside the phone and has got underneath the keypad contacts. You will need to take the phone apart and see if any sand comes out. So long as it didnt get wet the circuit should be working correctly.

Feel free to drop me an email. If you didnt want to fix it yourself i could take a look for you.

Keypad freeze

Did the key pad froze before you took the battery off? If so, it mean the keypad is damaged. If you have insurance, you may call customer service and have it replaced for a new one.

If it frozed after you shoot it off, you might call customer service from another phone and they might help you to unlock your phone.
