I dont use garage band but You could try just plugging a regular plug jack from aux out to your computer with a smaller jack adapter into your mic input. When you go to record a track it should pick it up-the equalizer should show movement when striking keys. Remember most music software requires you to select the option to play and hear the sound simultaneously.

SOURCE: iMac G5

If it isn't the power supply, some of the early G5 imacs had a capacitor failure issue...mine just died, in fact. It was just shutting off by itself, even turned on once by itself....but tonight, when it shut down, it would not restart. I opened it up and looked and sure enough, 11 bulging/leaking capacitors. My local service center says there are two options: 1. new mother board-aprox $500 or replacing the capacitors- between $170-200. Until Dec 15, 2008..this was apparently covered under a special warranty extension program Apple had....typical!

SOURCE: connecting external microphone to imac g5

Get yourself a great little gadget called iMic. It's a usb connector that adapts to let you used your headset mic and the mac system os will recognize it very well. Works good .
Costs about 24 bucks or so..

Firewire usff 7010

If you're asking if a Dell OptiPlex 7010 USFF will support Firewire the answer is No...Unless you purchase and install a Firewire card

The OptiPlex 7010 USFF has the following external connections:
  • Front Panel: one microphone connector and one headphone connector
  • Back Panel: one line-out connector and one line-in/microphone connector
  • Network Adapter: one RJ45 connector
  • Serial: one 9-pin connector; 16550 C compatible
  • USB 3.0: Back Panel - 2
  • USB 3.0: Back Panel - 2
  • Video: 15-pin VGA connector
  • 20-pin DisplayPort connectors - 2
I don't recommend any USB to Firewire convertors but if you can find a Firewire Convertor PCI Express Card you can try installing it but remember the USFF has only one Mini PCI Express 52-pin connector, I've highlighted a possible product. It allows for Firewire 800 speeds. The included optional internal Molex power connection is only required if your Firewire device doesn't have its own power adapter

Imac 9pin firewire port does not recognize my Sony DCR-HC52

Perhaps a USB to Firewire dongle will help sort you out. As you have discovered those two are not compatible. To make it work, you MUST get a 4 pin card and install it, or the USB solution.

SCSI to USB Cable or Converter for Astra 2400S Scanner?

You need a Firewire/ SCSI adapter. Mine is a Belkin F5U541. Then simply connect a SCSI cable from the scanner to the adapter & a Firewire cable from the adapter to your Mac. I'm using my old Umax Astra 2400S w/ a G5 iMac running OSX 10.6.7. I had to upgrade my old copy of VueScan, however, to run on Snow Leopard

My Apple G5 and WD Passport 500Gb don't mount

You need to determine whether the problem is at the disk interface or at the computer interface. Will the drive mount on ANOTHER machine using FireWire? Will your computer mount ANOTHER device using FireWire? This will tell you which machine is at fault. It's not unheard of for the FireWire channels in a Mac to just go bad, and (unless it is a Mac Pro) it typically requires a logic board replacement to address. For a G5, this would not be cost-effective. On the other hand, as I say, it could just be a bad interface in the drive itself. It's up to you to determine which it is.

G5 dual processor keyboard freezes for 10 seconds or so

you might need to check the usb connections for the keyboard and mouse. and see if they are correctly connected, also to clean the connections with a q-tip from time to time. Also you might want to switch to another usb port. to narrow down the issue. Because if say you change to another port and it still persists, even when running a usb hub with external power, and even a external firewire hub with usb connection then the issue would be the com board for the usb and firewire. and hopefully the G5's usb, firewire ports are on a separate board that is then ribbon wired to the main board. because if its just ports ribboned to the main board you will need to get a new logic board. and that is not cheap. unless you still have your applecare. then just take it in to get replaced.

Hi, my G5 won't "sleep" either by a direct command or after its assigned wait period.

If you have aftermarket third party USB or Firewire devices plugged in it may not sleep correctly. Try unplugging non Apple stuff and restart if it sleeps you can narrow down whats causing it. Go into control panels and set sleep to like 1 min to test.

Airport Extreme 802.11g

At this point you are much better off installing a USB wireless antennae than spending money on an Airport card, cracking open the iMac, and installing it.

USB wireless adapters are cheap, plentiful, and have more capabilities than the generation of Airport cards that were made for G5 iMacs.
