Help -- frustrating problem. When the phone receives calls it does not make a ringing noise, regardless of the tone/volume/profile settings etc. This is a recent event, has worked well until recently. Still makes sound for sms messages received. There is an icon on the front "ringtone only if the caller is stored in the phonebook". I don't seem to be able to turn this off, and there is no reference to it in the manual. Not sure if this is related to the problem. I have been through the paper manual and the latest online manual but cannot find any reference to this problem,
You've tried the Master Reset by typing *#9999#? What did the phone do when you tried this, if anything?

Go to Settings -> Ringtones ->Ringer Setting and you'll find an actual On/Off option, this option literally terns all ring-tones on and off, the fact that you are seeing the "ringtone only if the caller is stored in the phonebook" icon suggests that you (or someone playing with your phone) have accidentally turned the ringer off. As to the question of deleting duplicated address book entries, if you have copied your SIM in to the Phone's phonebook you can simply delete the one phonebook using the delete phonebook option (backup using SmartSync first). However if you have copied all entries in to the same book you will need to pick through them manually. Message back if this doesn't help.

Change the default phonebook, it sounds like you may have set-up a phonebook and/or group with custom rules that may well be empty. Backup your phonebooks using the SmartSync program for your PC that came with the phone, once that's done try deleting all phonebooks and groups except the SIM card, you can do this from the phonebook's options menu.
Also there is a firmware (Operating System) update available for this phone but it's not listed on www.benq.co.uk/support/downloads/downloads.cfm?product=1078 that would suggest that either the SmartSync program includes a firmware updater or you just need to download and run the SmartSync update from that page to install it.
if you haven't already done so backup your phone using SmartSync and then from the phone settings menu select Master Reset, you can also run a Master Reset by typing *#9999# and pressing dial from the home screen (this will not effect the SIM or network) then restore your data using SmartSync.
Dyllan, Master Reset by typing *#9999# and pressing dial is the alternative Master Reset method from this phones own manualhttp://www.sk65.info/Manual.1209.0.html?...
You can also download the manual fromhttp://www.phonedog.com/content/loadreso...
Thanks for letting us know how you solved it, that's worth keeping in mind. :)

Usually answered in minutes!
I fiddling around to try and fix it I have also duplicated the address book. Is there an easy way to delete the 'second copy' without killing the first ??
I've tried the settings/ringtones/ringer setting but still does not sound for incoming calls. (sounds for SMS OK)
So icon shows, ringer is turned on, but still no sound.
By stored information do you mean phone numbers ?? That's all we really use the ohone for.
Hi there -- I still don't have a workable solution to the problem of no incoming sound. I've done what you suggest.
GREAT NEWS !!! I have found the solution to this all by myself.
In desperation at lack of progress from suggested solutions I systematically fiddled with most areas of the phone. In doing so I found that the call screening was activated (which apparently generated the icon mentioned in my origianl post and stopped the phone from ringing.) I turned the call screening off and HEY PRESTO and as we say in Oz the bloody thing worked!! IIcon also disappeared). So in this case Fixya didn't get there, but hopefully you can use this solution for other customers should that arise.
