Question about Laing Thermotech Autocirc Undersink Instant Hot Water Circulating System

1 Answer

Pump is plugged into a hot line and will not run. It ran just over 3 months and quit totally.

Purchased from Home Depot 12/19/2012. Installed 01/05/2013. Quite working 3/29/1013. I would like a replacement ASAP. I have attempted to call the number that Home Depot gave me to call numerous times and your phone answering system each time finally hung up on me. I have another of your units which I purchased in 2001 or 2 and it is still running with never a problem. My name is William Johnson,42863 W Misty Morning Lane, Maricopa, AZ 85138. My phone number is 520-568-9334. My email is [email protected] Please, help me resolve my problem.

Hello Mr Johnson.
I will help.
I am timer expert at fixya. Fixya answers question. We are not home depot or warranty carrier for grunfos.
Here are some ideas:
1) Buy another pump at home depot and return defect in new package
2) Talk to manager at Home Depot.
3) Check if outlet has power. Plug recirc pump into different outlet.
4) Check if override lever is set to OFF, because pump will not run when lever is in OFF position: Here is photo I took showing positions for lever:
http://waterheatertimer.org/Water-heater-recirculation-system.html#lever
5) These devices are prone to surge event. Nearby lightning strike can burn out any electrical device by energizing wires. The surge can follow any path seemingly random trying to find path down to ground.
Add a comment and say what happens.

SOURCE: I have a ACT-303 that

Hi,

My thought is kinda crazy but it is the only thing that makes any sense...
I think that the pump may be running backwards....it happens sometimes that a motor can get a power surge or just plain decide to run the wrong way....this would keep you from getting the hot water and make it take longer then before as it is fighting the natural water flow and pressure...

There would be no fix to that... but I think that Laing has a 1 year warranty on their products...
I would check with the supplier that you purchased it from to see about a warranty replacement...

Have act303-btrw under sink hot water recurlater. Ran a line back to water heater, want to use this pump at water heater, pluging two sink lines off, will this work ok.Just use the hot inlet, cold outlet

You will need a ht return line which is feed into bottom of heater via pump. ensure that you install 2 block valves , one before and 1 after pump. Install a check valve between the discharge of pump and block vale. Why did you not by a recirculation pump that is designed to installed at heater. You can replace pump by removing it using 2 bolts?

I installed a tankless hot water 3 or 4 months ago , now i'm getting a error code 12

Meter has to be sized to meet need of all gas appliances in home.
Gas line to tankless should be straight from gas meter 1" up to within 10' of heater, and then 3/4" solid pipe as you have.

Call manufacturer for qualified technician in area.
Don't install tankless water heaters ... opinion based on answering questions online.

I purchased a hot water heater about two years ago from home depot and lost the reciept. I need to track the purchase by the serial number can that be done

1) Look for brand name of your heater on following .pdf file:
http://waterheatertimer.org/pdf/Find-Age-of-water-heater.pdf

2) Home Depot sells GE heaters made by Rheem.
I am assuming that serial number starts with 1209, and that year of manufacture is 09 for 2009.

3) These water heaters have glass vial that breaks when combustion chamber experiences overheating due to dirty combustion parts, clogged air intake, exposure to flammable vapor.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-repair-Rheem-TRD.html

4) Water heater warranties are usually first-year: full parts, labor and tank. After first year: parts and tank but no labor.
Warranty may be pro-rated and the value diminishes as water heater ages.
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-maintain-water-heater.html

5) Warranty may not apply is customer has not followed installation and maintenance as shown in product manual, such as checking anode rod, and yearly service by trained technician.

Our Rheem hot water heater started spewing water out of the top of the unit where it connects to the water intake. Went to Home Depot and they thought it was the dielectric nipple that needed to be...

I will tell you that a local plumbing supply house will sell
to anyone, not just contractors & is a lot less than Home
Depot & give out free advice & you will have a chance to
ask real plumbers at the counter as well

If the water heater is 5 years old, your not removing any
fittings at all,just replace it.

The Anode Plug is not coming out ,as you were told,
rusted in too tight

Both water in & out have to be soldered in & ball valves
above the in & out water lines

Rheem water heater model #82V661 serial # RH0106D11663 leaking water at lower panel. Water is coming from above wiring and control panel. Is this fixable or need to be replaced? Mfg date is 01/2006

You have 240volt electric water heater
Check both elements for leaking.
Check top of tank for leaking pipes.

If water heater is leaking from side of tank, then tank is rusted out and could rupture.
This tank must be replaced.
http://waterheatertimer.org/Water-at-bottom-of-water-heater.html

My friend welded his tank to get more life out of tank, but he assumed the risk.

Hot water heaters are under pressure from heated water which expands.
If tank ruptures, water will flood out of tank and water will run until shut-off is turned OFF.
This causes major damage inside home.

Protect yourself first, and then let's talk more.
1) Turn off water at shut off located on cold water line above tank.
2) Turn off power to water heater:
Gas heater, rotate valve to 'pilot' so pilot is lit but burner does not turn ON.
Electric heater, turn off circuit breaker.
3) Open tub spout on hot side and let run a bit to relieve pressure.
4) Now your property is safe.

You can limp along with failed heater if leak is slow.
Turn heater ON when you need hot water.
Typical Gas heater makes 41 gallons hot water per hour.
Typical Electric heater makes 21 gallons hot water.
Shower uses 5-9 gallons hot water, bath uses 12-14 gallons hot water.
http://waterheatertimer.org/images/Water-heater-reference-guide-2.jpg

If you are going to install heater yourself:
Look at label on side of old tank to identify size and particulars.
I buy ordinary heaters from Lowes and Home Depot and always buy scratch-n-dent models when possible, because superficial damage to outer tank does not lower lifespan of heaters I have installed.
Buy same size heater if it worked fine before.
Buy new flexible water connectors.
Set water heater in drip pan.
Offer 10% less than price shown. Make them deal with you. Shop Ace hardware, Lowes, Home Depot. Kick the tires since you have a bit of time.

I know you have electric heater, but many folks read these answers, so I include info on gas too.
#1 rule) tankless heaters are a rich-man's toy, because tankless will never pay you back, and will become major money pit if you encounter 1 repair. Electric tankless heaters require larger electric service box. Gas tankless require larger gas line (larger gas line, more gas consumption, bigger bill unless you cut consumption)
2) How to install gas heater:
http://waterheatertimer.org/How-to-replace-gas-water-heater.html
3) How to install electric heater:
Read link above because many of same steps apply to electric.
The difference with electric, is turn off power, disconnect wires, and reconnect wires exactly like before. Set electric heater directly on insulated surface like dense blue styrafoam. Cut styrafoam in circle so it fits inside dip pan. Wrap entire electric heater with insulation blanket, except don't cover TP valve.
4) Connect bare copper jumper wire between hot and cold pipes to prevent stray current corrosion which will shorten life of tank. Make sure cold water line is grounded.

Hot water is spraying out the plastic coupler that comes out of the water heater up to the pipe. Want to know if there is any way to fix this problem in expensively.

First thing to do is wrap rag or towel around spraying joint to localize water.
Next, turn off power to water heater.
If gas, rotate knob to pilot so pilot light stays lit but burner does not come on
If electric, turn off circuit breaker.
Close cold-water shut off valve above tank.
Open tub valve to release pressure on water heater.

Wait for water to cool before working on water heater to avoid high pressure scalding water.
When finished, make sure tank is full of water and water comes out of tub valve before turning on power.

Water heater should not have plastic couplings.
I can't see your problem exactly, but water heaters have 3/4" nipples coming out of top.
Easiest solution is use flexible connectors from Lowes or Home depot.

geno_3245_158.jpg geno_3245_159.jpg

Flexible connectors are 24" or 30" long and have 3/4" nut on each end, so disassemble existing pipes using pipe wrench.
Lowes and Home depot can help you select appropriate pipe >> take several phone-photos of your pipes to home center so they can see your problem precisely.
Attach 3/4" male adapter on end of pipe.
Attach flexible connectors between pipe and water heater nipple.
Cold water line has shut off ... make sure this attached to nipple marked cold.
Make sure hot pipe is attached to nipple marked hot.
Use teflon tape on threads.

Difficult to turn the water heater

step one... remove from wall
step two... throw in dumpster
step three... purchase and install a quality tankless water heater.

Rinnai, takagi, Noritz are the only brands I install now. Aquastar (Bosch) always had problems, then purchased by Bosch but never fixed the problems, just put their name on it and sold them at Lowes or home depot.
Garbage!
