Hiya 2 possibles here:
1 - At the back of the cassette, there are 2 "tags", one on the left, one on the right. if those tags are broken out, it wont record. You put a piece of tape over the holes, that wll do

2 - If thats OK (dont know the beat box myself) but often you need to press play and record together
