To clean the drain simply remove the packing nut off the back of the pop-up assembly. This is located under the sink itself and will be on the back side of the chrome (might be plastic) pipe coming out of the drain hole. This nut is what is holding the rod in place. When you remove it be sure not to lose the ferule (nylon washer) inside. after the nut is off, you can pull the actual stopper out and have better access to the drain inside. Use a small hair remover (you can buy these at the "depot"), it has a long body with small "spines" coming off the sides to catch hair, to pull out hair. It should be long enough to get into the P-Trap. After you are satisfied you can put the stopper back in. Make sure the hole in the bottom of the stopper is lined up to catch the rod. Reassemble the packing nut with ferule and check for leaks. If you want to take the trap off be sure to have some 'pipe dope' on hand to reseal the threads. Teflon tape is not necessary. Reassemble the trap and check for leaks and you should be good to go. Good luck :).

If I would have known that it was such a pain to remove the pop-up assembly on Kohler sinks
I wouldn't have bought them. Such a STUPID design!!!!
I will never buy this brand again.

What ever happened to the old style metal sink stop that you could twist, pull out and clean. Why do away with a design that is consumer friendly. I never would have bought this sink if I had known how much trouble it was to clean it. It also doesn't close tightly enough to hold any water.

My Kohler pop up bathtub drain was probably bought in 2001. I was trying to remove it so I could snake the drain and I found that by pushing it down while turning it counter clockwise, it unscrews and comes right off. (I had to use a towel to gip it). Although at first I was able to twist it to the left, it did not feel like the twisting was working, but it eventually rotated through all the threads and came off. However, it appears the drain cannot be snaked. there is an X shaped bracket that seems to be built into the drain itself (the screw for the pop up screws into the center of the X). I did reach down and try to pull on the few pieces of hair that were caught on the X and as I kept working it, a giant clump of hair came up. Walla! I have a clear drain.

How to unclog a bathroom sink slow drain when nothing has helped?

If the person(s) using the bathroom has long hair then likely that's the problem. You need to remove the stopper and use a "hair snake" that will reach down the drain into the trap and pull the hair mass out.

See following video.

Since you used caustic drain cleaners you need to take APPROPRIATE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS to avoid chemical burns to skin and eyes.

OR, call a professional.

Clogged drain on moen bathroom sink

There should be a stopper valve on the sink's downspout (the first section of drain pipe). You SHOULD be able to loosen the nut holding the stopper valve's lever inside the pipe. Once you remove that nut, you can pull the lever out - that releases the stopper inside the sink, so you should start with the stopper OPEN, and hold it open with a chopstick or pencil or other tool when you remove that lever.

The lever and the bottom of the stopper itself will be wrapped with masses of hair. That's normal. Clean it up and reinsert it, put the nut back on & snug it down, then readjust the stopper.

If that's not enough, you may need to open the trap (the gooseneck-shaped piece of drain pipe under the sink) to clean it out.

Very slow drainage of a small bathroom sink. Liquid Plumber does not help

probably hair stuck in the drain. did you remove the stopper "pop up" if no hair or blockage there or in the trap, then its further down, you will need a small snake. 1/4 inch cable works well in bath and kitchen drains.
you can purchase one at home depot.

Pop up sink basin wont stay down to allow water to stay in basin

I'm assuming this is a mechanical pop up drain. If so then one of three things are happening. Either the pop up mechanism needs to be adjusted, there is build up inside the drain where the stopper is or the mechanical parts are worn and need to be replaced.

Remove the items from underneath your vanity so that you have room to work. Under the vanity the pop up will have an adjustment rod. It is possible that the adjustment has slipped resulting in the drain not closing off properly. Try adjusting the connecting rod and see if that helps. If not move on to the next step.

You will need a small pail to catch any water when you disassemble the pop up. Inside the sink put something under the stopper to hold it in an open position because when you disassemble the pop up it will drop to the closed position and may be difficult to get out of the drain. Under the sink there will be rod coming out of the drain held on with a threaded nut. Unscrew the nut and the rod will come out of the drain and deattach from the pop up inside the drain. From the top of the sink remove the stopper. Clear any of the build up which is usually a distasteful combination of hair and soap scum. A pair of latex gloves come in handy at this point. Check the pop up for wear at the point where the rod attaches. It is possible that this could be worn to the point of not working correctly when the mechanics of the pop up are moved to the closed position. Your local hardware store will have any replacement parts required.

Be sure to reassemble every component before using the sink and test for leaks. Good luck with your project.

Peerless sink plug is clogged with hair. How do I

The plug is held in place by a rod that connects to the plug lever. Look under the sink where this rod enters into the drain. The rod is held in place with a cap that is screwed onto the drain pipe. Unscrew the cap, pull out the rod, and the plug with then lift out.

On some sinks, the plug can be twisted to release it from the plunger rod, you simply twist it until it unhooks. It it does not twist, then folow the first set of directions
