I have the older block version of the PS2. The problem that i'm having is that it continues to say "cannot read disc" and sometimes a disc pops up, but when I select it, the screen goes blank. Then the screens reappears reading "please insert playstation or playstation 2 format disc". What format disc? Can anyone help? Thanks
Are you using a real game disk or are you using a burned disk? If its burned you need a MOD chip for it. If its real then try to open up the PS2 and try to clean the lens gently with a q-tip. It helped me a couple of times.

If you have old ps2(fat one) or some of the older slim models they are unable to read the new dual layer discs like GHWT. You can send your ps2 back to sony to reformat it to be able to read these new discs for about $50. There is currently a class action lawsuit against sony and activision for not being upfront about this problem.
I can guess that the games you are trying to play have a Blue underneath and not silver. This was a big problem with my sons disks too using the older version of the ps2. We managed to mess about with some of the settings and changed the rgb setting to the other option (can't remember what that was now...sorry) and got some of them to work, but not for long. When the new games come out now they expect you to have the slimline ps2 and unfortunalty won't work on the older model. So to fix this problem I just bought a new one.
theres a difference in the older guitar hero games and newer ones, CD Rom for the older and DVD Rom for the newer, Ps2 wont read the DVD Rom ones, my experiance so far.
