My memory battery for my Garmin GPSMAP185 needs to be replaced. It is welded to to circuit board. I would like to know how to remove and reinstall the new one without damaging the computer or new battery.
The battery is a Panasonic BR2032-1F2; the suffix desinates that it has two flat tabs for soldering into the unit horizontally. Once you remove tha back of the unit, you'll see the battery next to a resistor that's siliconed in place. You'll need to knife the silicone loose so you can gently move the resistor aside to reach the soldered tab underneath it. Just heat the solder on each tab with a small soldering iron until it melts and the tab pops loose.
Install the new battery with the unmarked side up (the other side has type) and solder in place. Reinstall the power and antenna connections in the cover, replace the cover, power up the unit and start re-creating all your lost waypoints.
Batteries can be ordered online from Allied Electronics at $2.42ea (www.alliedelec.com)

OK called Garmin and they no longer support this machine so we are on our own. The good part is the battery is a run of the mill 2032 battery with nothing more than a tab welded to it to make connections easier. The battery is used to keep your way points and tracks in memory. Your machine will work even if the battery dies but your way points will not be held in memory. You will loose them when the battery dies or when you change the battery. If you have PC link , back up first.
Unscrew back cover, you will see battery, unsolder using least heat possible, put in new battery and use small wire to make link from back of battery to the original connection point...when you reseal the case make sure to wipe the seal and mating surfaces clean and assemble carefully. Tighten screws evenly a little on each one at a time until you feel it is snug. Tighter is not necessarily better so do not over tighten.
Hope this helps---p.s. batteries are same kind used in just about every computer out there---there are good ones and bad ones spend the extra 2 bucks and get a Duracel ---or you will be doing this again in a year or two..
Just an update---the battery is an BR2032 I used a DL 2032. Odd thing is the connections went fine, lost my saved data as expected but on restart unit still says memory battery low....
What Garmin rep did not say was that both sides of battery have a soldered connection and the battery is in upside down There is also a ring of insulating material around the battery ( I used silcone) to prevent a short to the posts you solder to. I have rechecked the battery and it is good, I obviously have a connection as it will save data again even after disconnected from the main power and reconnected ( not sure if htis maters) but it still gives Low memory battery error at start. I am wondering if there is a reset for this error or something as unit works fine now and I know I have voltage. Without battery the unit will not save any data. Tried it.
Good luck guys..PS if your over 40 you will need your glasses for the soldering lol:-)
