Thanks. I iwll try. I have been looking at the parts diagram for this chainsaw (Husqvarna 365) and have not seen the key. I was afraid that the chainsaw might not have a key but instead have a notch (key) built into the flywheel itself making me purchase a more expensive part, i.e., a new flywheel.Thanks. I iwll try. I stand corrected, I looked at 4 different breakdowns for the 365 and cannot find a separate key. All the chainsaws that I have worked on have a separate key just for that purpose.I stand corrected, I looked at 4 different breakdowns for the 365 and cannot find a separate key. The key can be bought separately, I would go to a Big Box store and usually they have a small assortment of replacement parts for power equiptment, let me know if you have any problem finding it and furnish me with the model and I will find one for youThe key can be bought separately, I would go to a Big Box store and usually they have a small assortment of replacement parts for power equiptment, let me know if you have any problem finding it and furnish me with the model and I will find one for you

If its back firing through the carb, It would point towards a timing issue, the engine is igniting the fuel/air mix before the full compression stroke, meaning that the cylinder port on the carb side isn't fully covered by the piston when ignition takes place. Check the ignition system, Plug, lead, ignition module and flywheel. The fly when has a moulded woodruff key in it, these can become worn or broken and cause the flywheel to turn out of position, advancing the timing of the spark.
The timing is fixed via the crank, and the flywheel key, the only adjustment is the air gap between the coil and the flywheel, this should be set at 0.3mm
The 41 was quite prone to blowing the crank seal on the flywheel side, remove the flywheel and check, at the same time check the flywheel key has not sheared, behind the carb fixing plate is a rubber induction tube, make sure this has not split, als check the impulse seal underneath the induction tube.
I suspect the new flywheel is a little better balanced than the first (test it) and does not need the additional weight. Is it the same part number (537 23 39-01)?
I looked at the Husqvarna site and ALL 338XPT California models use the same part number flywheel. None show a separate key.
At $100 each for replacements I might take the original flywheel to a local machine shop and ask about machining a Woodruff key slot. Take your saw and the old flywheel once removed; he may need to "Mic" the crankshaft slot; take the new one too; it can also be "Mic"ed.
You ask a good question (separate key). Have you asked Husqvarna or your local dealer? There may be some unannounced help.

there is a special tool to seperate the carnk case halfs.looks like a "c" clamp.they are very expensive to buy.there is no other way to seperate the case halfs with out distroying them......
you need a rope with nods on it ,put it on the sparkplug gauge to block the piston in the cilinder, after that try to unlock the clutsch and the flyweel. Then disassembly the engine and change the seals.

Someone else had said that the key was cast with the flywheel.
