Question about Sony KP-53S65 53" Rear Projection Television

1 Answer

Convergence Well... not sure of the model number right now... but, the picture is there... mostly clear, but not using the entire screen. It looks like it's somewhat "peeled up" from the bottom right-hand corner... and appears to be a slight off-set of the colors on the right and left hand sides. I've been to the "convergence" option in the tools of the TV... but, all I'm seeing is a bunch of "+" symbols all over the place... and not sure how to work the convergence. Help???

Samsung LN52A850 Horziontal Lines Double Image on Right Side of Screen

Saw the video just now: looks like smearing and if pushing (don't do that) results in it clearing or changing it is either an issue with the boards(set uses two to drive the panel--(one for right and another for left in most cases) OR one of the connectors from the display panel which is the entire front screen unit has a loose or dirty connection or has come loose inside the panel there--if that then entire panel would have to be replaced and it is cheaper to replace set if the panel ends up being the problem.

Someone has to look inside and GENTLY probe to see what or where it is being caused by.

Screen is black after the initial white screen that displays "Philips" Sound there but black screen with no picture Menu does not show either Nothing but black

I believe a firmware update can fix this issue. However to be sure I would need your entire model number, including the numbers after the slash. You can put that entire model number into Philips support website, http://www.usa.philips.com/#/headernav/consumer/

Once you get to your TV's support page, you can look on the right hand side and find the firmware information. First I suggest you read the Read Me file to familiarize yourself with the update process and what issues it fixes. Then you can download the firmware to your computer so you can upload it to a USB drive to perform the update.

Hope that helps!

No picture but I have sound

First possibility to get checked the power supply board.but as you mentioned that there is sound but no picture this clears that power supply is OK.
Sound, but no picture in LCD TVs is indicative of an inverter board failure. This is the board that powers the back lights that project through the LCD screen. An inverter will run about $180 plus labor. An online source for replacement inverter boards is available here. You can cross reference by your Make and model number.

The inverter board looks like this, and is normally supplied by a dedicated voltage from the power supply (24vdc or 60vdc). Most of the Polaroid models use 24vdc.
6d4af5a.jpg

Its not that difficult, the web site that I provided you with a source for a replacement also has a little tutorial on replacing an inverter. They vary in location by manufacturer, but usually on the left or right side - and look like the picture I provided you. Just be gentle with the cables you have to remove and replace.

The tutorial is here.

this will help.thanks.

After the tv is turned on it turns off 3 or 4 times after turning it back on and the screen turns blue for a few minutes before becoming clear. It lasts longer each day.

Many of these sets had problems with bad picture Tubes--they use a red, green and blue crt. Most commonly the blue gives troubles--The tubes are now only available on a rebuild basis--usually not worth doing as the cost is very high.

You may have a bad blue picture tube but there is a way to deal with this first----the set has a black plastic block with six controls---three are Focus(red, green, blue) the other 3 controls are Screen controls(red, green, blue)

Someone has to remove the entire piece on the front of the set below the screen(usually a plastic part) most of the time it is secured with 3 screws on either side of the set in the back; once you remove the screws the entire piece should pull out(pull from right to left(it will not fall off or come out easy--it is held in with several large plastic pegs) With it removed there is an inspection plate with 4 screws-----the screen/focus block is behind it.

You need to look very closely at the block to identify the focus versus screen controls----one row left to right will be marked Focus and the other row left to right will be marked screen------YOU need to locate the Blue Screen control (they are black like the block) With the set on(be careful) go to a video input clip_image001.gif with nothing connected---if you see a blue screen as well as the input number turn the BLUE SCREEN CONTROL SLOWLY TO THE LEFT UNTIL THE BLUE is gone.

If this cures the problem you may only be buying yourself some time----if the blue picture tube is bad sooner or later this trouble may return----I have seen sets where this was adjusted and the set worked for a year or more with no repeat of the trouble----replacing the blue tube would likely cost you 400 -500 parts and labor.

I do this here for free so if this has helped you rate this solution.

Philips Magnavox 55P8288 Entire picture has green

Your TV most likely has one or more possible problems.

Problem #1: Convergence Chip Failure ( common problem )

Here are some of the most common symptoms and example photos of a convergence problem
  • Screen looks 3D
  • Colors don't line up
  • One or more colors can't be adjusted when using the convergence menu.
  • Screen is bowed or warped.

Here is a quick test....

Using your original remote go-to the tv settings then goto the convergence section.

Try to adjust the red and then the blue convergence.

You should be able to move them up, down, left, and right.

If you can't move them in all directions your convergence chips are bad and should be replaced. This is a common problem.

You need to replace the convergence chips and convergence resistors. Check the site www.TvRepairKits.com. They have put together a kits for most models. If you don't see a kit for your set send them a quick note and they will put one together for you. Their kits include a photo instruction guide, original OEM Sanyo STK chips, convergence resistors, pico fuses, etc.

Problem #2 CRT Fluid is Cloudy

Projection TV tubes have a liquid coolant that is used to keep them from overheating. After many years the coolant in the blue and green tubes will become cloudy and cause the screen to look dull, red/orange, etc. You may even see halos around images.

Picture of a set that needs the fluid changed.

What you will need to do is replace the coolant and clean the crt. You can get a repair kit from www.TvRepairKits.com that includes replacement coolant, photos. instructions, etc.

In need of replacement screen not sure if getting correct one

You'll have to take the screen out of it's housing (involves taking the screen entirely off the laptop, and then removing the bezel around the glassy area by removing the screws under the little circles of plastic) and remove it from the hinges and then finally, you'll be able to see a sticker on the back that has the actual model number of the screen. be sure that it's an exact match to the exact model number. Even if the connector fits, the controller might be different and it won't work at all. Compare pictures, compare model numbers, try to see if they'll guarantee it working on your exact model of laptop (unlikely, but it's worth trying).

See this document by Dell about how to take the screen out. Be sure to follow the instructions carefully.

Sure sounds like the CRT fluid is cloudy and needs to be replaced.
If its not the fluid the convergence chips are bad.

Thin horizontal line across the entire TV screen

Hi, your correct it is collapsed vertically, you should have re-soldered it before it failed because now you may have to replace the IC but I would re-solder it first as this possibly will fix it, look for a small aluminum (silver colored) heatsink with a black 7-10 pin IC screwed onto the heatsink, flip the main board over and this IC will probably have 2-3 (or more) pins broken, re-solder with 60-40 tin/lead solder, you didn`t give make & model number so thats all the info I can give you, good luck, BMW Rider

Picture Shortens, Converges, eventually the set shuts off - $50 for Correct Solution

Open the TV amd turn it on in a position you can see the picture, possibly through a mirror. Now gently tap all of the metal heat sinks on the circuit board until you find the one that is sensitive it will have a small chip mounted vertically on it, with probably like 7-10 pins. The number on the chip will most likely be an "LA****" number. Now turn the circuit board (UNPLUG FIRST) over and resolder the pins. This is your problem 99% of the time. Be very careful there is High Voltage inside this TV.
