This one is simple. first connect the hot water hose to either inlet. now turn on washer for cold water only. if no water enters machine, you have it correct. now connect cold water to other one. now repeat cold water wash...does water come in?

There is a tap or valve on the heater or hose that controls the hot water to the heater radiator, make sure this is working and not closed or broken.

My machine sometimes will not start when using just cold water. I don't have it hooked up to the hot water faucet because I don't use hot water. I switched the cold water hook up hose to the hot water...

If you live in or near a big city, there is a part you might use that might solve this problem. I bought one for my daughter's house. It is a "split hose", it is in the shape of a "Y". You screw the bottom of the "y" to the water outlet, then screw the top two legs of the "Y" to each of the connectors on the back of the machine, means you have whatever water that the Y is hooked to going in to both of the connections on the back of your machine.

Be blessed.

I moved my washer and didn't notice how the hoses were connected. Is the hot on top or bottom? Thanks

There should be markings on the washer near the inlet valve that will have a "H" or "C" for hot or cold. If not, hook the hoses up and run cold water only. If the water comes out hot, you will know that the hoses are crossed. It won't hurt anything to run the machine this way.

1) Low-boy water heater, cold water connects to lower inlet pipe and hot to upper outlet pipe.
Cold enters bottom of heater and then hot water rises to top where it leaves tank.

2) With larger water heaters both hot and cold connections are on top of tank, but the cold water goes to the bottom through the dip tube.

If pipes are reversed, the water heater will not work.

I just bought a Jayco trailer with an Atwood 6 gallon water heater which works on both electric and gas. I was able to locate the bypass valve and made sure hot water was in the tank, however I only get...

Check your by-pass again. Cold water enters bottom fitting/line, and hot comes out the top fitting/line. Any valve in between should be closed, and any valve going in at bottom should be open, as well as open at top. There are a few different by-pass set-ups, so without knowing which one you have, this should guide you somewhat.
If you can describe what you see there, I can probably guide you through it.

How does rhe hot and cold water hook up on a 71-40d which is which top and bottom

Tanks are marked with Hot and Cold.
1) If water connections are on top of tank, look for red marking or word HOT that shows where hot water pipe connects. Look for blue marking or word COLD that shows cold water connection.
2) If water connections are on side of tank, cold water connects to bottom one, and hot connects to top.

3) If hot and cold are reversed, the tank will not work.
Pipes on top of tank: cold water enters tank and is sent to bottom of tank in a long tube called the dip tube. This means the cold is on the bottom since hot water rises to the top. The hot water exits top of tank.
Pipes on side of tank: You want cold water to enter bottom, so hot water naturally rises to the top outlet.

I just installed a new electric water heater with dual high limit elements.I hooked up the red and black wire, just like the old one and set the limits to 125 and turned on breaker. we waited about 6hrs...

Most water heaters heat the water on top first. This is because the warm water will rise to the top and the hot water is drawn off the top. When the upper thermostat turns the top element off then the bottom one comes on. It makes it sound like there is a problem with the top element. Disconnect electric, and read the resistance on the element terminal to terminal. If it shows open the you have a bad element. Did you make sure the heater was completely full before turning the electric? You must run the hot faucets to remove all the air from the top of the tank before turning on the electric. Elements will burn out quickly if out of the water.

Not enough hot water to complete shower. Noticed

If it is a new water heater it might be that the water supplies are crossed. The cold water should be installed on the right hand side of the tank or on the bottom if your tank hooks up on the side. If its an older water heater the dip tube may have broken off. This is a tube that runs from the top of your water heater on the cold side to the lower portion of the tank.It puts the cold water in the bottom of the heater which pushes the hot water to the top.To change the dip tube out you must disconnect the cold water supply from the 3/4 inch nipple at the top of the tank. Then with a pipe wrench unscrew the nipple from the tank it will have the remainder of the tube on it.You can get a replacement dip tube at a plumming supply. Installation is opposite of removal. If this is your problem I suggest you get a new water heater .Usually its caused from minnerals in the water or buy two dissimiler metals being connected together in the water piping system causing corrosion Your water heater will probably fail in the near future.

One tub of water and im out of hot water

Replace drop tubes where they hook up on top of the tank. You are only getting water from the top of the tank. Remove female adapters(copper) on top of heater. You will find them inside the steel threaded portion of the pipes with a tapered flange to keep them from falling down inside the tank.
