I have an old ps2, and it has a disc read error. I tried to clean the laser, and nothing. The problem is that the disc is grinding on something. The disc tray has been taken out several times, so it might have gotten a wrong footing. Anyway, when the motor reaches full speed, the disc will jump off the motor. Currently, the PS2 is taken apart with only the case and the disc cover
taken off, not the heat sink or anything else.

Disassemble the whole thing, and clean Clean Clean. Be careful with the fan connector,it is very delicate. Clean the lens using a magnifying glass to see if you got it real clear. The lens sometimes touches the disc media surface and can collect some bad stuff that normal cleaning will not get off. Check me out at www.playstationclinic.com is you need more assistance. Adding a magnet to the puck may not always work. Let me know how your doing on the repair.
Try replacing the magnets on the plastic for one, as they may be week by now... That is all I can say, sorry man. Tom Smith's idea sounds good to me...

You should buy a replacement dvd drive for the ps2 , for about 25.00 USD on ebay, it is easy to install considering you already have taken apart the ps2

sounds like your laser is failing. You can find tutorials on how to adjust, clean or replace your laser. Do a google search for " ps2 disc read error " it will give you a choice of plenty of tutorials to follow. Good luck
What you need to do is take you ps2 apart and clean it out and clean the laser lens that reads the cd's...you should be able to google ps2 disc read errors and get videos to help you through it.
Disc Read Error is mainly due to worn-out,dirty lens and it can also appear because of the disc that you have inserted in your PS2...... Try following to get rid of DISC READ ERROR:

Now this is strange PS2 hangs up..............!!!wHich pS2 u have.........???slim or the old fat one.........???As far as disc read errors are there, u should clean ur lens by using some lens cleaner CD or do it manually[for fat one] urself it not a big deal........becarefull while opening the cover....clean the dust on lens with the tissue or any other light material......the problem can also b with ur disc change that also...........
You said the model is 77001?? is that the slim type ps2?? if it is try this troubleshooting step
if the console is lying down flat where the disc lid is at the right side, try applying pressure on the lower right corner of the lid, sometimes the lid's safety button gets worn out and it will give you disc read error if this solves the problem then the button really is busted, if you have technical background you try and change the button
You will ne4ed to clean up the PS2. open it up and clean the laser lens with alcohol on a cotton swab. If it is the Slim Ps2 model you should not use Alcohol. Use A glass Cleaner like windex on the slim. Sometimes the magnet gets week and you need to add some magnetism to help improve the spindle grip on the Game disc. Cut up a refridgerator magnet and place it in the white cap thatt clamps the Game disc in the cd player.
Check your disk for scratches fingerprints ect,, if thats all good step two try useing a lens cleaner
****(( tip and trick for scratched disks ))**** a crayon rubbed on the disk then wiped off with a lint free cloth no t-shirts dish towels that will just add more scratches remember start at the center wipeing out to the edge.
