This was a top of the line TV, when I bought it in 1993. I know it reaches an end of live. But the picture is still perfect and PT has no visible signs of weakness.
Recently the picture started shrinking horizontally on a right side and a black bar appears. The bar width is approximately 3/4 - 1/2 in. It becomes wider when the picture is bright and almost disappear on a dark scene. Occasionally the screen “jerks” and the black bar on the right becomes “zigzaggy” and then straightens back. I suppose it has something to do with the power supply. However, given that this TV is somewhat sophisticated and has complex circuitry, looking for an advice as specific as possible form someone who had worked with this model in the past. I do own a complete service manual.

Is good that you hit it and it reacts, very likely you have loose conections in different places but for the distorted picture you need to check the horizontal driver transformer and flyback after that is corrected you need to check the complete chassis for loose conections.Take your time.Good luck.

I have seen this problem before.
The problem turned out to be caused by a poor solder joint on R530. This is in the HV
sensing circuit and is associated with IC501/ comparator. The resistor was replaced for
good measure and proper operation restored.

the problem there is a loose connection on the board, you said that you smacked the right side of the tv and it goes normal.there are parts that should be resolder on the board in order to back into normal operation.
