If you remove the front cover and access the blower fan and see if it is still tight on the shaft. if it isn't it makes a rumble sound when started due to vibrating and after a while it makes more noise as it goes. Now I removed the fan and placed a shim in the flat area and matched the flat area of the shaft and replace it back on the shaft and it should solve it.

My 13 year old Maytag Dryer rumbles to a start when you turn it on and rumbles to a stop. Sounds like the belt is slipping to me. Should I contact a repairman to replace it?

I would check the drum rollers and glides first, the other cause may be the idler assembly which is next to the motor, it keeps tension on the belt. Since you will have it apart you can check the belt for cracks and wear, if it looks good then I would not replace it. eBay is a cheap place to find dryer parts, here is a website on the rollers/glide you can go to the virtual repairman and it will help. I think it is a good site to troubleshoot just about anything you may have problems with, Good Luck Tim.

My Maytag dryer is 14 years old. Now it makes a

Your problem sounds like drum rollers have flat spots on them or in need of lubrication.
If you have a front loading machine, Unplug the dryer, remove the front of the dryer. This will expose the drum and belt, remove the drum and belt and this will expose the drum rollers.
Check your rollers for flat spots, if they have flat spots on them replace them.
If they don't then they probably only need lubrication. Lubricate the shaft of the roller with a good grade of machine oil such as 3 in One oil. Reassemble the dryer, plug back in. This should solve you noise problem.
Yes, replacing the drum rollers is fairly cheap especially if you do it yourself, saves you the price of a new dryer for a few more years maybe.
Good Luck,
I hope this helps

Loud rumble sound, Vent hose vibration

That model of neptune dryer had a problem with the blower housings cracking. When the housing cracks, it binds forward into the blower wheel making a loud "rumble" noise and vibration. If you open the door and manually turn the drum and you hear a rubbing noise and feel alot of resistance, then you have a cracked blower housing and need to replace it. It is not an easy job to replace, so if your not familiar with dryers, you should have a technician replace it. Let me know if you have any further questions. shane

Maytag Dryer, 25 year old dryer has a loud squeak

Hello.

The squeaking is coming from the rollers that the drum rides on. If you take the model number to a local appliance service store they will have the parts and be able to direct you on replacing them.

Have someone change the bearing, it sounds like it has busted on ya. The rumbling sounds like the ball bearings in the bearing have failed.

Dryer makes rumbling noise intermittently

It sounds like a faulty roller under the drum. Need to pop the top of the dryer, then remove the front -- you'll probably easily spot the faulty part.

Electric dryer makes a rumbling when tumbler is turning.

Check the drum bearing, a load noise, and often spinning problems are symptoms of a bad drum bearing. The bearing is at the base of the drum and accessing it is not easy.

You can find diagrams and replacement parts entering model number here.

Maytag Dryer Model DG312 gas

Honestly, I must advise on getting a new dryer. A new dryer will run about $200-500 depending on which kind and where you get it. Repair on a dryer will cost roughly $125-$200 pending parts and labor rates if you decide not to do the repair yourself. But there is a way around those two options. Depending on your area, a Sears technician can come out to the home for $65 (pending location) and diagnose the problem and give you his/her estimate on how much the repair will cost. If you decline the repair, you may ask the technician for a voucher coupon for the trip charge that may be applied towards a new dryer from a Sears store priced at $399 or higher.
