Most Singer sewing machine manuals are available from their support web site: http://www.singerco.com/support/instruction-manuals . For most regular machines, including the 500 Slant-O-Matic, make sure that the needle take-up lever to the highest point with the hand wheel. Loosen the needle clamp screw and insert the needle with the flat side of the needle to the back of the needle holder. Keep the grooved side of the needle facing you. Make sure that the needle goes up as far as possible. The direct link to the manual for the 500A is http://www.singerco.com/uploads/download/1308_500.pdf .
