if you turn the volume way up you can hear it a little bit if you put your head to it.

9 times out of 10 a set has no sound because something is not set right. Make sure the signal is good (some cable boxes can be set for no sound), go through the audio menu and make sure the speakers are set to ON, make sure the set is not in the SAP mode, or look for a speaker switch on the back of the set. If you check all of that and still have no sound, your audio output IC could have failed and the set should be serviced by a qualified tech.

Toshiba 32 AV502R LCD TV has a horizontal red line in the middle of the screen, then after a while you can see two colors

Picture does not always come on, sound always comes on, when TV is turned on; some times takes as many as 5 cycles to get picture to activate.

Sounds like inverter boards or backlight boards are defective, there two of them in most Toshibas
and the master board usually dies. If when the tv is on and has sound look closely with a
flashlight shined at the screen you may see movement of the picture, as the screen is most
likely working, just no lights behind it.

I have a Toshiba 32WLT66 that is 3 and a half years old, it has developed 'shadows' on the screen that can be seen particularly when the screen is dark. Any ideas.

It sounds like you have bad inverters on your tv. Those parts are usually under $200 if they are even still available. Call a loca tv shop to further diagnose the problem.

Black screen no picute - sound only

It can be that the backlight inverter boards (2) have gone out, look to see if you do have 24vdc feeding the board, otherwise it can be bad power supply, look for bad caps.
